Dare to Dream…

Long ago I abandoned my dream of being a Princess…I gave up the dream that Prince Charming really existed and was gonna show up any minute and whisk me away to a beautiful castle, because I moved on from being a child…and fairy tales.

Then I dreamed that I would become an Olympic gymnast…I even took lessons, but then I discovered that boys really didn’t have cooties…and I didn’t want to spend hours in a gym anymore.

So then I dreamed that maybe I could be an author and write great books, or a poet who would touch people’s hearts, but instead I dropped out of school with just 2 classes left to graduate with a 3.5 GPA…because I wanted to be an adult…when I really wasn’t.

Later on I did go back to College, and I did really well…and I dreamed once again. This time my dreams were for a successful and long career  in my chosen field. 10 years later I was burnt out…and so I quit dreaming for awhile.

Today my dreams are more realistic and smaller. I want Bookish Temptations to be successful.  I want to get in my 20 years at my job, and then move onto something else. I’d really love to work in a smallish bookstore and talk about books all day with people. I want to meet a lot of the peeps I twitter with. I want to travel all over  Europe. I want to travel around the US. Nothing too huge. I’m ok with having smaller more manageable dreams.

You may be wondering why I’m talking to you about dreams…where I’m going with all this…

Review: A Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught

Elena’s thoughts:

Those of you who know me on Goodreads  are already aware of my passion  for Judith McNaught’s  novels. Yes, I’m a huge fan.   I discovered her books last year  thanks to an Amazon.com recommendation and to my friend @chriserlyn who encouraged me to read them.  Well,  I soon became  addicted to her stories and what stories they are!

“A Kingdom of dreams” is the kind of book you want to read over and over again. When I really  love a book I find myself not being able to let it go. I just can’t put it on the bookshelf and leave it there. I wear its pages out due to the many re-reads, I add notes and highlights to the point of craziness. But I guess, this is what a good book does to us readers. To be a good book means to leave a mark on the reader , to make him think about it over and over again and “A Kingdom of dreams” is one of them.

FANFIC FRIDAY: ~ Quick and Dirty ~ Debb and Annie share their favourite one shots

Happy Friday and welcome back. This week, Annie and I are sharing a few of our favourite one shot stories. Sometimes you just feel like a quickie, right?

Seriously, I love reading one shots. I rarely fic dive for full length stories but love to troll my favourite authors’ profiles for outtakes or stand alone shorties. It’s also a good way to see if you like an unknown-to-you author’s writing style before committing to a multi-chap.

Perhaps you have committment issues? Can’t settle on an Edward to fit your mood? One shots are the amuse bouche of the fic world (not really but I’m leaving it). I’ll also own up to a short attention span; one shots give me a little Edward boost and then let me go on with my day.

So, without further ado, here are Annie’s three choices… after the jump of course!

Review: Watermelon by Marian Keyes

At twenty-nine, fun-loving, good-natured Claire has everything she ever wanted: a husband she adores, a great apartment, a good job. Then, on the day she gives birth to her first baby, James visits her in the recovery room to inform her that he’s leaving her. Claire is left with a beautiful newborn daughter, a broken heart, and a body that she can hardly bear to look at in the mirror. So, in the absence of any better offers, Claire decides to go home to her family in Dublin. To her gorgeous man-eating sister Helen, her soap-watching mother, her bewildered father. And there, sheltered by the love of an (albeit quirky) family, she gets better. A lot better. In fact, so much better that when James slithers back into her life, he’s in for a bit of a surprise.

My Book Boyfriend…Jericho Z Barrons

Week #3 of My Book Boyfriend hosted by Missie over at The Unread Reader

This week My Book Boyfriend is: Jericho Z. Barrons from the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning.

Anybody that knows me well can tell you how much I flove this man and talking about him. He is in my, not so humble opinion, one of the best and the sexiest doods ever written, and that’s saying a lot considering all the books I’ve read.

1st a physical description mkay? Jericho is about 6’2 with dark hair, golden skin, and dark eyes. He has strong, chiseled features, and a full mouth…Can I just say I love authors who use the term full mouth?  *thud*  He’s intensely masculine, and sexual with an omnipresent carnality about him. He’s around 30. He has an accent and his ancestry is Pict. You can google it…I did.   He dresses in fine clothing, and looks mighty fine in them. He’s usually a button up shirt, and tailored trousers type of guy, but he can rock the jeans just as well. The backview is really quite spectacular.  This makes for a whole lot of  fantasizing durtay dreams pleasant thoughts for me, and if you haven’t read these books yet. O trust me on this. You’ll  have a good time with Jericho…infuriating quite often, but with his skills and prowess?!? I’ll live with it ;)

Your Q’s My A’s…

I am often surprised at the questions people ask me about Bookish Temptations, book blogging in general, and um…about me.  Today I am going to share some of those questions and my answers. Some are funny, some are serious, and some?!?

Q- Is it hard to run a blog?

A- Well that depends. In general, if you want to have a successful blog  you have to be willing to invest a lot of time and effort.  I think you also need to be very passionate about whatever it is you choose to blog about. More specifically, if you choose to run a book blog you’ll need to read a lot, and be willing to interact with publishers, authors, marketing assistants, other book bloggers, and most important of all your readers. When you hear a blogger say it’s a 2nd job, we’re not kidding. We don’t get paid for it.  It’s a labor of love. It makes things much easier if you have partners. I’m very lucky in that I have a great team here.

Personally, I think you need a good teacher/mentor at least when you’re first starting out, and it sure helps if someone can help you design it as well. I’m fortunate that I have both in one friend *coughJAGcough*  I still don’t have everything mastered, but I’m getting better. I don’t do wonky nearly as often as I used to, and I know what a #jump is.  ;)

Q- Do you get free stuff?

A- I can only speak for myself  here,  and I can honestly say that the only thing I get free is ARC’s, eARC’s, and book DL’s for the express purpose of reviewing, and/or participating in a blog tour. That’s it. Again, I can only speak for myself, but if I love a book even when I’ve been given it free in some form I will also purchase a copy. Why? Because I want the author to get compensation. It’s very important to me personally to  support  my authors in any way I can. I also like to have all the different  editions it comes in, so that means I buy the Kindle, paperback, and if available the hardback. That’s just me tho.

Q- Are you married?

A- I have no idea why this would be of interest to anyone, but the answer is no. Not for awhile and I’m not looking for any marriage proposals. I do however love a bit of flirting  ;)

Q- Your blog is different from a lot of other book blogs I visit, why?

A- I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or an accusation, but the answer is simple. I made a conscious decision to run Bookish Temptations differently than most book blogs are. Altho my primary goal is to promote books, reading, and writers,  I wanted to talk to the people that come to visit on a more personal level. Most of my posts are written as if I’m talking directly to someone(s) because I feel like I am. I want to have a relationship with my readers. I reply to the majority of the comments that are left as well. I want you to be engaged with me. I also want you to have a good time here. Reviews are important but I like to do lots of other kinds of posts as well.

Q- Why do you use bad grammer/spelling? Did you fail English?

A- Surprisingly, I got very good grades in English. I will make a  confession to you tho… I once had a teacher tell me that I treated commas like they were BFF’s and I should use them more  like a casual aquaintance. Clearly, I have disregarded that advice and I use commas way too often and incorrectly. Srsly tho,  I do spell just fine most of the time, and when I don’t it’s usually on purpose…for fun. I’m sure it makes some people cringe… As far as the rest of my grammer skills go…well I’m not above admitting that my colon/semi colon, apostrophe useage, and sentence structure isn’t flawless, but hey…give a gurl a break and overlook it ok?

Q- Have you ever met an author in real life?

A- Yes. A few months ago I got to meet Myra McEntire who is the author of Hourglass. She’s funny, and nice, and even more gorgeous in person. I also met Beth Revis and Victoria Schwab and all were delightful.

Q- What authors would you most like to meet and why?

A- Hmm…I could write a whole post on this, but I’ll  be brief…

1) Sylvain Reynard- Well, he’s smart,  funny, and very well mannered,  but I bet he knows how to have a good time too. Plus he likes poetry.

2) E L James- British accent… check.  However, once I got over that I think we’d just have a gigglefest.

3) Debra Anastasia- Let’s just say I have a feeling the 2 of us together would require bail money to be available.

4) C L Parker- Anybody who signs stuff with FLYAS has got to be awesome in all kinds of ways, and we both live in the South.

All of the above are people I’d actually like to visit a bookstore with, grab a cup of coffee/tea, and browse and discuss books with. Or, have a sit down dinner and drinks with and just shoot the proverbial breeze. I’m really quite adept at making intelligent conversation, sprinkled with fun and silliness.  Of course it’d also be great to have a one on one conversation with each about their respective book(s). I have so many questions of my own I’d love to ask. Are there more authors I’d like to meet that aren’t on this list? O of course there are. I’ll save them til next time.

Q- Are you writing a book? Have you secretly written a book? Do you write FF?

A- Have you been talking to my mother? No, No, and No.  As much as I might wish I had the gift…I don’t.

1) I can’t write dialogue. I’ve tried. I suck at it.

2) Even if I could write dialogue I’ve never had an idea that was novel or even novella sustaining. I might be good for a short story as long as the dialogue was nearly nonexistent.

3) There isn’t anything  nonfiction I feel proficient, or enuff excitement for to attempt telling other people about it. O… except maybe travel…O wait…I don’t do it enuff to write about it. History maybe…I do have a thing for all kinds of history and it was another area I excelled at in school.

I have a Fever…

No silly…not that kind of fever…this is the good kind….and it all started with Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning.

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a post about one of my favorite book series. That’s right I’m talking about the Fever books by Karen Marie Moning. So,  I’ve decided to revisit them. I’ll be doing a series of Fever posts over the next few weeks…cuz in all honesty…there’s no such thing as too much Fever.

I did a review of the series as a whole back in July. Now I want to delve a little bit deeper into each of the books on their own.  I didn’t find these books by myself. Nope, I gotta give credit for my addiction to ‘em where it belongs. JAG was the Fever dealer for me, and it’s been almost a year since I first read this literary crack.

The 1st book in the series is Darkfever.  Here’s the publishers blurb…

MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands….
