So last week, someone said something in the comments, that made me think about some of my favorite fan fic authors. The comment was, “These authors consistently give us well-written and entertaining stories.” Most of the authors that I’ve featured, have loads stories on their profile, but there are a few amazing authors that don’t. Sometimes it’s about quality more than quantity.
Sleepyvalentina. She is most well known for her extremely popular story Art After 5. I actually read the companion piece to that story first, Counterpoint, because it was Edward’s POV, and honestly I will always choose him over Bella, if given the option. Just saying. BUT. After reading Counterpoint, for the first time and only time, I disliked Bella so much, that I decided not to read Art After 5. I know, I know, but if you’ve read either story, you just might understand why I chose to be Team Kate this time. This is definitely not an insult on her writing for me. In fact, it is just the opposite, this proves just how fantastic her writing is, to affect me in such away. Which brings me to her story I recently read, Fall to Ruin One Day.
The author again blew me away with her compelling characterizations. The storyline goes back and forth, from when they first meet in college, to present time, ten years later. A young and extremely insecure Bella was kind of hard to read at times, but I still kept rooting for her, in hopes that she would figure things out and make better decisions, which we get to read about, with the older Bella in the future. Edward, on the other hand, has his own issues, namely his father. I didn’t always like Edward’s actions either. So why did I keep reading? Because I wanted to know if these characters would redeem themselves. It starts out with Bella as a freshman rooming with Alice Cullen in Washington D.C. Edward, Alice’s older brother, is studying law, because he wants to become president one day. Family issues keep both of them from going home for Thanksgiving. Bella is invited to stay with Edward, with no place else to go.
The attraction is instant, but Bella has no experience dealing with her overwhelming feelings for Edward, let along the physical nature of their new relationship. Edward at times takes advantage of her insecurities, and sometimes perpetuates them, but he has his own self-doubts about the choices that he makes regarding his future. It is a hot mess, I tell you. Four years into their relationship, Bella decides one Christmas, she is done. Literally leaving Edward behind to wonder what happened. Ten years later, a chance meeting at an airport, forces them back into each other lives. Will it be for the better? You’ll just have to read to find out, won’t you? There is also a twist in the characters’ connections to each other, I did NOT see coming that knocked me on my ass. For me, this author pushes me to think outside of the box, and that, my friends, is a very good thing.
In lieu of whole scenes, I selected passages that are my favorite instead. Going for something different this time.
This is some of Bella’s thoughts during their first awkward moments together:
I don’t know how to say that though there isn’t anything wrong, everything is different. So I don’t say anything. I don’t tell him I’m thrilled to be staying in such cramped quarters with him-even if he is just having me here as a favor to Alice. I don’t admit that the idea of sleeping in his bed scares me, but not as much as the possibility he may not want me here.
I don’t mention that even though I’m too afraid of rejection to tell him I like him, I wish I’d packed cuter pajamas. Then I realize I don’t even own any decent pajamas, but I want to buy some, because he makes me want to feel pretty and sleep in sexy things.
This is ten years into the future with a much more mature Bella emerging:
It doesn’t surprise me that Edward invites himself to stay for lunch.Aliceis in the kitchen just long enough to whisper that she’s sorry before Jasper and Edward stroll in behind her. Edward is cavalier to the point of cockiness, and while in the past I would have found it annoying, today I’m grateful for it. It grounds me and forces me to remember that none of my feelings for him have changed. Without this, I’d let love and heat consume me, just as they had before. We’d burn; I’d burn. The flames would extinguish themselves only when there was nothing left. I wouldn’t cease to exist, but I’d die. I know it all too well–even if I mistook it for compromise at the time. I also know that without the luxury of naïveté, it would hurt even more.
Now, WriteonTime, is probably the smartest and funniest authors out there. Both of her stories made me think, feel, and laugh while reading. She also has one of THE best descriptions of Edward I’ve read in fan fic, “an unnervingly perfect specimen of humanity”. Seriously, could that not be more perfect?? Her story, Breaking News has everything you could want, and again reminds me that it is so cool that we get to read this for free.
So Edward is hot, smart, funny and kind of quirky, as an investigative reporter turned anchorman. And he uses the word, “am scray” in a sentence. *giggle* Bella is equally intelligent and funny, holding her own in the world of broadcast news. They are awkwardly thrown together to anchor a national evening news show, and hit it out of the park in ratings their first night on the air. That’s great, right? But what to do about this intense attraction to each other? And what about Edward’s draw to chase the more dangerous stories out there in the world, to keep the show great and improve ratings? How do you love a man who lives to put himself in situations most people don’t usually survive to tell? Very carefully. With the help of friends, family and coworkers, that are equally hilarious in their own right. I should probably mention that you’ll also learn about particle physics, even if you didn’t want to.
Some of my favorites passages, that made me giggle:
”You have my appreciation. My respect, however, isn’t quite as easily won. That you’re going to have to earn.” “That’s fairly ironic. You have my respect, but I can’t think of anyone I appreciate less at this particular point in time.”
“Who is this big mountain of man? You block the sun.” “Yeah, but I radiate my own special light.”
“Doesn’t it bug you that I just went in there with the expressed intention to flirt with a woman who we all know is so warm for my form that she sweats whenever my name is mentioned?”
“Well, I’m sorry you can’t have what you want the minute you decide you want it,” I answered. “Appreciate the novelty.”
If you would like to be amused and swoon some more over another Edward, than read her other amazing story, The Port Angeles Players, some time. You will not regret it.
Who know these people would have such an affect on all of us? Well, at least ONE person in the pic definitely affected me…
It blows my mind that this will be the last time, our favorite Twilight characters, will be at San Diego Comic Con. Where has the time gone? I mention this because WriteOnTime will be there this weekend, with other fan fiction writers as part of the Twific panel to answer questions. How cool is that?!?!
I hope that this post will compel more of you to comment, because you never know, maybe your thoughts will inspire a future post. I love to hear about what you’re reading!!

Thanks for such a great post Katie! I’m blown away by some of these authors and the quality of their stories. I love WriteonTime’s style and she’s written two excellent well crafted stories. I feel fortunate to have read them & I hope she continues to write more.
SleepyValentina’s fanfic, A Fall to Ruin, has definitely peaked my interest. *bookmarks*
It is so wonderful there is a Twific panel at ComicCon for fanfic enthusiasts. Looking at that photo from 2008 ComicCon makes me wonder who knew SM’s Twilight & these actors who brought these characters to life would inspire so many great fanfics?! All I know is ONE has been a true inspiration to many and will forever be my “wonderwall”.
Thanks sweetie. I know you just recently read Breaking News, and that reminded me of how much I loved that story.
