How hawt is it when you see an attractive guy reading or carrying a book around with him? Well if you love books as much as I do then it’s pretty effing HAWT! So here’s a few of my favorite readers…with a few dedications as well. O and a short clip with Rob Pattinson at the end. He’s my most favorite hawt reader dood of all 😉
Welcome back to Fan Fic Friday! It’s nearly New Year’s Eve and, inspired by Tamie’s Top Ten lists, Annie and I have compiled our own fic list… the stories that owned us this year. This was soooooo hard – TWSS!
Annie’s top pick: We Come to Life Beneath the Stars by LillyBellis
As Bella Swan starts over with hopes of finding her future, Edward Cullen is hanging on desperately to his past. She’s treading water, and he’s a corporate golden boy. They share an office, but few words…until one night changes everything.
From Annie: This is my favorite fic of the year. Bella is trying to build a life on her own terms but this jerk she works with is not helping, even if he is a hottie. Why is he so strange and secretive? I love, love, love Lilybellis’s work. Her writing is beautiful and her stories never fail to touch you. This one has romance, humor, a little family drama and a sweet Edward (my favorite). Love.
It Happened One Night by Spanglemaker9 From Annie: When ‘just sex’ isn’t. This Edward reminds me of Tyler Hawkins a little. (He does not die.) I read this one four times at least.
The Cellar by iambeagle Boy meets Girl. Girl’s friend throws up on Boy’s shoes. A story about wannabe hipsters, awkward moments, and soul mates. (Debb: Twitter was abuzz with this one and I can’t wait to read it!)
Love in my Box by CosmoandMarvar Bella’s an intellectual free spirit and Edward is a reserved, slightly geeky med student. They have a brief, but intense encounter on Sp Brk in Miami. Can they find true love through emails? There will be lemons and laughs. Look who’s writing this!
This is a contender for top spot for me. Beyond hilarious but also sweet and oh so sexy. This is the Edward for me. Why can’t he be real? *sobs* Also, I like to pretend the Esme in this story (Edward’s wonderfully raunchy, frequently sloshed mother) was based on me. 😉 A wonderful bonus is the number of outtakes for Love in my Box! The story never has to end! *twirls* Be sure to check those out. This is a double Top Ten as it appears on both my and Annie’s list.
Lots more after the jump!
I’m a curious type of gurl. I like to know the why’s and how’s of things. It’s probably why I majored in Psychology and practiced it for 10 years. I wonder about all kinds of things, and let’s be honest, lots of the things I think about are not earth shattering. For example, I often wonder why people pick the places to sit that they do when they have a choice. Like in a classroom. Some people always gravitate to the same seating area. I myself almost always chose to sit near but not in the front, and fairly close to the door. The more comfortable I was with the Professor…NO! Not that Professor…the closer I would venture away from the door, and more toward the middle.
Anyway, I think about stuff like that all the time, so naturally I’m somewhat curious as to what might bring people to visit my blog. Some peeps come because they’re my friends and we have a common interest in books, authors, fantasy boyfriends, etc. and they’re supportive of me. Some people come because they think I’m entertaining in the way I present the topics I write about. Some come out of curiosity, or because my site was recommended or twittered about. Then there’s the ones who come because they’ve typed in a phrase in a search engine and up popped Bookish Temptations .
The platform I use is wordpress, and one of the features is a page called site stats. It gives all kinds of info to me every day. It tells me how many site visitors I have, and what posts they visited. This is important to know because it lets me know what topics you guys like best. It tells me who referred the visits, ie. whether it was via twitter, facebook, search engines, etc. That’s as specific as it gets tho. It doesn’t tell me who came, just where they came from. Some of you just heaved a big sigh of relief. That’s ok, we all have our secret guilty pleasures, and I’m certainly ok with being one of yours 😉
There is another box that is more specific as to the search engine terms that are used to bring people here, and most of it is not unexpected. Mostly it’s certain books, certain authors, certain characters, certain topics, but every few days I’m surprised by at least one term or another. I have to wonder how surprised the viewer is once they get here as well. I thought it might be fun to show you some typical as well as untypical search engine terms that have been used.
Just in case your curious…like me.
One of my favorite things to discuss here…other than my fantasy boyfriends are great quotes, scenes, and passages from my favorite books. I do this because I’m hoping for one of two reactions.
1) That I spur the interest of someone who hasn’t read the book they come from enough so that they’ll go read the book.
2nd) To bring back good memories for those who have read and enjoyed them.
Most of the books I choose to read nowadays don’t come from the big publishing houses. They are books not readily available in places like Barnes and Noble, or even from your local library. There is so much talent out there that needs your help and support. I really hope that you’ll take a look at the smaller publishing companies like Omnific and TWCS if you haven’t already.
When you find an author(s) you love make sure you spread the word. Recommend, review, list, tag, rate. You don’t have to have a blog to do any of those things. You can do it on Goodreads, Amazon, Twitter…
Do the authors appreciate it? YES! They do!
I promised you great passages didn’t I? Well what are you waiting for? Make the jump and read…O by the way…most of the ones I chose are …erm…spicy. Did you bring your fan with you?
************BREAKING NEWS FLASH****************
I love words. Seriously, me and words are tight, best buds, BFF’s…Wait! What?!? ? You’re not surprised by this revelation?!? This is not a stop the presses, call all your friends, monumental statement? Wow! Not much gets past you guys. 😉
Seriously tho, I do have a fondness for a great many words. I thought I might share a few of those with you. If you have any particular favorites please feel free to share them with me. Yeah we’ll share and compare.
I guess with some of the words it’s really a matter of liking how they feel when I say them, or how they sound when spoken. Other words conjure up certain images or memories. Some words are just silly and make me laugh. Some words need a pairing with another word for the full impact. Quick…how many times did I just use the word- word?!?
We use words to convey our thoughts and to generate emotions. If we had no words…EGADS…we’d have no books, and thankfully there are those who are able to string words together in such a way that we derive great pleasure in reading them. Words are important to me as well because I need them to do this. When I’m writing you these little gems I call posts there is a word counter. It keeps track for me which is a good thing. I like my posts to be a certain length. In general I aim for 500-1500 depending on the subject. At the end of all this wordiness I’ll let you know exactly how many I used, abused, and tortured in this one. And yes…sometimes I massacre the spelling of words here. By the way, most of the time it’s intentional and on purpose 😉
So, with no further explanations then…On your mark…get set…WORDS!
I’m one of those people whose mind is always whirling away, thinking of stuff to write here, thinking of conversations on twitter, work, etc. I keep a small notebook with me to write the brilliant stuff down, cuz I tend to forget if I don’t. O, and I keep a notebook next to my PC for the same reason. I’d share my notebook with you, but I use a shorthand that would probably be hard to decipher. Sometimes I have trouble with that myself, and I’m the one who’s writing it 🙂
Anyways, I was looking through it the other day, and I thought I’d pass along a few of my observations that have to do with literary stuff… and fantasy boyfriend type stuff.
I don’t know about you, but I really do find arrogant men in fiction to be quite sexy. A few good examples of this in my opinion are Jericho Barrons, Gabriel Emerson, and Christian Grey. I think they all come off as arrogant in one way or another, yet I find them all to be quite…erm…arousing. Yes? Now in real life I rarely find arrogance sexy, altho there was one guy…HUH?!? O. Wait. Never mind. I’ve actually given this some thought…imagine that… and maybe at least part of the reason I find it so irresistible is because I feel like these guys actually have a reason to be a bit pompous. They’re all men of means, smart, and sophisticated. They all have good taste in clothes, cars, wine. And well geez, the sexual skills they all possess is …um…outstanding, impressive, desireable…
Hey, I gotta admit to something here…I sure am curious as to why the authors make them that way. Authors, feel free to let me know the answer to that.
Have you ever noticed how much it adds to a fantasy boyfriends value if he’s able to speak a foreign language? OMG! *HARD THUD* When they start speaking in Italian, French, or Spanish?!? Well, let’s just say that I do some pretty heavy duty
panting swooning. Seriously, they could be talking about the national debt, or a business deal and it would sound erotic as long as it’s in another language. I’m thinking it almost demands to be a fantasy boyfriend prerequisite. Hmmm.
I think it’s pretty well known that I have a particular fondness for certain physical characteristics, and recently when I was reviewing my fantasy boyfriends I realized how many of them share those certain traits. Not that I’m unwilling to take on a different type now and then. Let’s see…1st of all, I like ’em tall. Admittedly, this might stem from the fact that I am quite short…just a wee bit over 5’3″ if you must know. I’m sure a psychologist would tell me I have some sort of height issues…which I don’t. Believe me when I tell you that my big personality more than makes up for any lack in that area 😉 Maybe it’s the thought that a tall man would be able to protect me should the need arise? Naw, I just like ’em tall.
I like my guys broad shouldered and slim hipped… um yeah the well known reverse triangle…that’s just hawt! Moving on…since these guys are nearly perfect male specimens they gotta have some muscles. Nope, I’m not talking Mr. Universe type bulging muscles either. I’d much rather my guys bulge somewhere else…capisce?
I prefer dark hair and either blue or green eyes. Maybe the eye color thing is because I have brown eyes…kinda one of those opposites attract things?
I don’t really have to have washboard abs…but I do insist on being able to gawk at the glory of the deep vee. Mmmhmm…the deep vee…
Almost all of my pretend doods are financially well off, but I want you to know that this is not a necessity for me. It’s an added perk of course if he has the ability to whisk me away at a moments notice to somewhere far away…Paris or Florence come to mind, but I’m good with just being able to cuddle and…and…and…for long hours at a time. You do know that stamina is a requirement right? This is never an issue with fantasy boyfriends. Some of my guys are ready and willing to go 24/7 which might interfere with actually having a life outside of the bedroom…or wherever, but hey I think I could make do. Of course that tends to be a whole lot easier if they have gobs of money, so maybe I need to rethink that earlier thought.
Ok moving onto a different topic for a bit…
I love descriptive writing. Some peeps are quite happy with minimalism in this category, but not me. Huh-uh…I like it when an author uses vivid words that spark my imagination while I’m reading. So what do I consider good descriptive writing? Does descriptive necessarily mean wordy? Nope. Let’s take a look at a few passages that will give you a better idea of what I love. I’m pulling these from my Kindle. I do in fact have many such passages highlighted. (and you thought I only highlighted the sex stuff…pfftt) I will tell you that I rarely highlight my 1st time through a book. Why? Because it takes too long. My 1st time is all about being focused on the story, so I bookmark a lot and then during subsequent readings I highlight and/or make notes. Someday I might be persuaded to tell you how many bookmarks and highlights/notes some of them contain. Honestly, it’s just an embarrassment of riches.
Through an opening in the trees they entered a small clearing that was carpeted in thick grass. Wildflowers and weeds and old rotting stumps littered the expanse of green. The air was quiet and vibrated with peace. And at the edge of the open area stood several aged apple trees, weary-looking and worn. (Gabriel’s Inferno, Kindle location 1270)
Angelfucker, thought Gabriel. The expletive sprang into his mind, unbidden and uncensored, and he tensed, rumbling low in his chest. (Gabriel’s Inferno, Kindle location 1378)
For basier in French could mean either the innocence of a kiss or the animalistic quality of a fuck. One could say le baiser and refer to a kiss, but if one said, Baise-moi, one was begging to be fucked. Both innocence and begging were wrapped up in the embrace of these two lovers whose lips never touched: frozen together, yet separated for all eternity. (Gabriel’s Inferno, Kindle location 1738)
The breeze swirled in, rustling her hair almost affectionately and bringing with it the scents of fresh-turned earth, green leaves, and the first flowers of summer. (Small Town Girl, Kindle location 181 )
I feel him before I see him. It’s as if my whole body is highly attuned to his presence. It relaxes and ignites at the same time- a weird, internal duality- and i sense that strange pulsing electricity. (Fifty Shades Darker, Kindle location 1094)
What is your thing, Anastasia? he asks, his voice soft and his secret smile is back. I gaze at him unable to express myself. I’m on shifting tectonic plates. Try and be cool, Ana, my tortured subconscious begs on bended knee. Books, I whisper, but inside, my subconcious is screaming: You! You are my thing! I slap it down instantly, mortified that my psyche is having ideas above its station. ( Fifty Shades of Grey, Kindle location 526)
Pink little girl, pink dress with pink ribbons, pale pink skin, clean and scrubbed, like sugared almonds, like coconut ice, powdery soft, pink and white. (Emotional Geology, Kindle location 1643)
Holy Crap! Le satisfied sigh…I could go on and on…see why authors are some of my most favorite people in the world?
I have a definite preference for books of a series rather than “stand alone books”. This one is pretty easy to figure out. When I flove a book I don’t want the author to let the characters go because I don’t want to let the characters go. Does that mean I think every book should have a sequel or more? Nope, just the ones I fall helplessly in love with.
I think you’ve all figured out by now that I have a certain… erm… shall we say proclivity, for the romance/erotica/paranormal genres, and if a story contains all 3? Well then I’m counting my lucky stars. In any event, it might surprise you to learn that I used to be all about the mystery/thriller genre. Yep, for years that’s about the only thing I read. Now I’m a bit more balanced in what types of books I choose. I say a bit more balanced because I don’t see my current ratio changing any time soon.
As much as I love my Kindle and the whole e-book phenom I still adore a physical book. I love the weight of it in my hands. I like the smell of a new book the 1st time you crack it open. I enjoy turning actual pages. I like to feel the coverwork art with my fingers. It’s an experience for me that I never tire of. One of my favorite places to spend time in is a bookstore. I can quite happily spend a couple of hours just feasting my eyes on book after book. All the various colors and textures are both soothing and exciting to me. I never fail to feel uplifted as I leave a bookstore. That is one reason why I still buy them. For that little rush of euphoria I get. I also like to support my authors by purchasing any and all versions of their work that I can. That’s important to me. I have been asked if I ever go back and purchase the books I receive free as an ARC from a publisher or an author. Simply put…HELL YES… I’m buying that book if I love it. It’s a present to myself that I won’t be denied, and more importantly, I want those who give the gift of their words to be compensated.
I think that’s a good place to stop for now. Don’t worry I have lots of other observations I’ll share with you in the future.
P.S. Just one more thing before I go…Is it just me or is it especially hawt when our favorite guys use a certain word? Not just in a sexual context but in just about any context? Yep, I’m referring to the word FUCK in particular. There’s just something about a guy saying that in the fictional world that makes me squirm in a good way. Why is that? Anybody?
Coming up this week on Bookish Temptations…
A post of observations…the literary kind.
A post that’s all about words…good and bad.
Passages from books that I love…both naughty and nice.
FanFic Friday with Debb and Annie.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas full of love, family, friends, and good stuff to eat. If you got presents I hope you got exactly what you wanted. I certainly did. I received several Amazon gift cards so I can buy more books, and several of my family members donated to charities that I specified which are in fact the best gifts of all. Here’s to looking forward to a terrific New Year.
Happy Day before Christmas Eve! Welcome to FanFic Friday – Holiday Edition. Annie and I are bringing you a long list of seasonally-themed fic – both the nice and naughty. 😉
First up, a short and sweet story rec from Annie. Merry Textmas by DiamondHeart78
Bella is forced to tackle the crowds on Black Friday with her best friend, Angela. Can a random text message from a wrong number change the course of her day and her life? Banter galore! AH. VOTER’S CHOICE WINNER for the Naughty & Nice Holiday Contest!
From Annie: This was a happy discovery. Can a wrong number text lead to love? Read and see! It’s short (5 chapters), funny and very sexy. (From Deb – oooh it can be a reward for finishing your shopping! Sounds good.)
Lots more fic “presents” under the tree… I mean, after the jump!
All week I’ve looked back at my favorites of 2011. It’s been a stellar year in my opinion for readers of all genres. Now it’s time to start looking forward to what I think will be another great year.
There is no particular order to this list because I’m truly excited by the prospect of reading them all. Most of the books have titles already but a few of them are still waiting to be named. (Arched brow at 3 of you)
I have included a very heartfelt note to all the authors whose books have appeared on my top 10 lists this week at the conclusion of this post.
Now, let’s break out the bubbly, pop the cork and drink a toast to what awaits us in literary bliss for 2012!
I gotta admit that this list wasn’t as easy as the others for me to come up with at 1st. Why? Well, to be honest I tend not to concentrate on the secondary characters in a book. You know the reason for that don’t you? It’s because I focus in so hard on the hawt doods 1st, and then the lucky gurls that get them 2nd (sorry authors). I had to really stop and think…go thru my Kindle…my bookshelves…my reviews…You get the picture. Once they came back into focus for me tho it was pretty easy to pick them out for my list.
I like my top 10 and they are certainly memorable characters that should get recognition. This list includes both the good and the evil by the way. Seems only fair to represent both.
