Happy Day-Before-the-Weekend and welcome back to FanFic Friday! *throws blood-red confetti and dims the lights* Today… we’re talking vamp fic. Darkwards… *shiver*
I hear the same story from fic readers over and over. They read Twilight, devoured the series, discovered Midnight Sun online, reread the series, looked around at their Edward-less world and cried, “I honestly don’t know how to live without him! What now?”
Twilight Fan Fiction, that’s what.
Many of us simply weren’t ready to leave the Twilight world and turned to “extension” stories like Lolashoes’ “Let Your Light Shine” or Laura Cullen’s “The List”. I know I did. These stories also bridged the gap for women who were left not “fully satisfied” by the Young Adult version of Bella and Edward’s relationship.
Once in the fic world, the sky’s the limit. There are all human stories, cross-overs, non canon pairings… just about anything down to and including Hucows (don’t ask – actually ask if you’re curious, lol) and tentacle porn (don’t ask – for real this time).
Yet, some of us *side eyes Annie* return to Vamp fiction. For me, Edward is the reason I love Twilight and vamp fan fic let’s me relive that initial feeling. I also love all the “different” Edwards. What if he drinks blood? What if he doesn’t live with the Cullens? Most authors retain the things we love most about Edward; his intelligence, his passion, his beauty, his struggle to control himself (or not as the case may be). Vampward is all about the danger fantasy. Will he kill her? Will he change her? Will he break her during sexy time? 😉
Read our recs after the jump!
This week, Annie and I are bringing you our fave works in progress. In the coming weeks we’re going to do a post about our favourite completed Vamp fics so if you have a fave you’d like to share please feel free to link us to it in the comments. On to the recs!
First up, from Annie:
When Debb told me we were talking about vamp fics this week my first thought was “I don’t do vamps” (Shush Edward, you know what I mean, silly vampire.) But it’s only a soft limit. There have been a few vamp stories I’ve read and enjoyed. cough1929byDebbcough (note from debb: I’m leaving this because Annie tries to sneak me in every week – twss. Carry on) The one that stands out the most for me is La Canzone della Bella Cigna by philadelphic
A famous voice teacher. A mysterious piano prodigy. Backstabbing classmates. Music school is competitive, and aspiring singer Bella Swan is determined to succeed. Hard work she can handle, but who expected music school to be dangerous? A story in 3 acts.
Although it sadly hasn’t updated since 3/11, I still think it’s worth reading for the extreme beauty of the writing and Edward. He is very much like book Edward without the bizarre morality. The story is about how Aro is trying to manipulate Edward & Bella into joining the Volturi Guard. Too bad he didn’t bet on Alice. I’d say the story is about two-thirds complete. I hope she can finish it someday.
Next up, my choice for vamp fic wip…
AU. Edward Masen was changed in 1918 and abandoned by his sire. He feeds on human blood, unaware of any other way…until he stumbles across college freshman Bella Swan for a night that will change everything.
This was the first “Darkward” fic I read. Amethyst Jackson has perfectly captured Edward’s voice and woven a complex, intriguing story. An excerpt from Chap 1:
I snorted. “I can think of better things to do with you than study you.”
She blushed furiously, and I realized the double entendre in my words. There was the reaction I’d been waiting for. It was the sure way to undo every human’s rationality – get them thinking of sex. How laughable. I hadn’t thought of sex in years…I’d tried it, of course, with the occasional female vampire I came across, but I couldn’t stand to hear their thoughts…so loud and distracting. It was hard to lose myself in the act when the woman was spending the entire act thinking of herself. I guess I couldn’t complain. I thought entirely about myself, too.
I cast a contemplative eye on the girl beside me. She continued walking with her eyes trained on the ground. What would it be like with someone whose mind I couldn’t hear? Ridiculous thought. I’d probably crush her halfway through, and that would ruin the fun. I’d have to make her a vampire for it to work, but I wasn’t going to leave a drop of her blood remaining. Besides, I worked alone. A partner would only complicate my life. And what were the chances that I’d be able to tolerate her presence for a month, let alone eternity?
Oh my tortured, selfish, monster Edward. What’s he going to do? This story is beautifully written, hot as hell and very, very intelligent with it’s existential themes. There are 38 posted chaps and the story is near complete. Updates are on the slow side but, like Edward, worth waiting for. This is a top five for me and I’ll be printing it and putting it on my Twilight shelf when it’s done.
Next up is a double rec! Annie and I are both loving this one, a horror/romance with a very mysterious Edward. We are very excited to rec..
A taken life. A conflicted nature. A twisted courtship. E/B, AU
From Annie: This story made me cast my soft limit aside completely. I love that they’re meeting as Vamps, and that Edward’s the one that changed her. Tink’s writing keeps me riveted and fascinated. Everyone should be reading this.
I agree with everything Annie said! This story was inspired by a WitFit prompt and I’ve been honoured to see it develop from a tiny, terrifying chap (read that one on a dark, stormy night – horror indeed) to the intriguing multi-chap story it is. The story is 6 chaps in and at the half-way mark. The premise is completely unique to me and the writing is beautiful! This Edward is a bit of an ass sometimes. We love that though, don’t we? Especially when we know Bella is gonna turn his world upside down and show him how it really is. Tink has been updating regularly so, while you may be waiting for the other two recs for a while, not so here. Here’s an excerpt from Chap 1:
But this human. This creature. The blood pricked every sense on contact and rooted itself in my lifeless organs. I was no longer surprised I smelled her from a greater distance than normal. She was not normal. I never stopped my hunt to think why I couldn’t hear her mind. No one would ever hear her again. My eyes were lumps of coal as I tracked the hypnotic essence. Nothing mattered but the thrumming blood. Not her silence. Not her dying future. Nothing.
Nothing but her blood.
Taking her had been easy. It was almost a game but the game was over now. The door was discarded. The screaming body was silenced, unconscious, limp, and cradled in my arms. When I had ripped the door from her car, her fear increased to dizzying levels. If I were human, my knees would have buckled at the assault of adrenaline. Her reaction made the blood pound in my ears. Her eyes had locked with mine for a moment but quickly vanished the second I mauled her throat. I vaguely recalled bones snapping as I caged her to my body but the intoxicating blood had me staggering in the street, forgetting the risk of exposure. One of my hands had fisted her hair, stretching her neck for my access. The other hand covered the expanse of her lower back, pressing her to my groin. I moved to pin her against the car hood, bending her backwards as I dented our bodies into the metal.
The car helped ground me as light burst in and out of my vision. The pounding rain merely caressed my back as the conclusion of this life aroused every inch of my body. I was seconds from being caught. Shutting out human thought was near impossible and that annoying talent saved me as a car rounded the highway bend. Having no desire to taint this moment with the blood of another human, I shoved our bodies further into the car and propelled us into the surrounding forestation. The car rolled us like dice and out of view from the clueless driver who was already fading into the night. I made sure to protect her from scratches so the branches and rocks wouldn’t steal her blood.
My blood. I would have every drop.
Taken is listed as romance/horror but I’ve found it to have humour and heartbreak too. This is a must-read!
So, there you have it. How about you? Do you love vamps or stick to all human stories? Are any of these on your favourite list. Let us know in the comments below.
Happy Weekend all! xoxoxo Annie and Debb
