In a world gripped by organized crime, family dysfunction, and dim hopes of redemption, can true love persevere? For Sophie Taylor, a beautiful psychologist who lost everything when she violated an ethical boundary, and Grant Madsen, a handsome naval officer who sacrificed everything to protect a loved one, finding that love may carry an unbearable cost.
Starting their lives over in Chicago, both are fighting influences from their family and running as fast as they can to escape the past. When their paths cross outside the parole officer’s door, the attraction is instantaneous. But a hidden connection may not only shatter their fledgling love, but prove deadly to them both.
Grant Madsen and Sophie Taylor meet as just released parolees…who actually shouldn’t have been locked up, but were because of bad choices and circumstances. O…and they both had help from others getting in their respective predicaments. They are drawn to one another pretty quickly as was I.
Grant is a swoony, honorable, charming,ex-military guy who has the misfortune of mob connections via family. Sophie is beatutiful, smart, and funny, and had a promising psychology career until she got involved with a patient…with mob connections.
The relationship between Grant and Sophie is both sweet and sexy. In fact, there’s quite a bit of heat in the story. There’s also miscommunication and secrets that would be better shared, but that’s part of the complications they face as they get to know each other better. Both have fears and trust issues…deservedly so.
The mob connections come back to bite the couple in some very interesting ways. Can Grant and Sophie manage to navigate the troubles they’ll face? This book is filled with twists, turns, and a whole lot of suspense that left me wanting to read faster to find out how these two would solve all the issues they come up against…both as a couple and separately.
Two very important secondary characters that I loved were Parole Officer Jerry Stone and Ship Captain Roger Eaton. Both are great at handing out grief to Grant and Sophie with wise-cracks about the couple’s relationship, but you know that despite the gruffness they really want Sophie and Grant find love and happiness.
I think this would be a nice summer read. Take it to the beach, or on a cruise…I think you’ll have fun.
My rating for With Good Behavior by Jennifer Lane:
A Solid 3 hearts
