Hope Collier Shares a Holiday Snippet from The Willows: Haven

Today, I’m happy to welcome Hope Collier, author of, The Willows: Haven to Bookish Temptations. I loved her book when I read it last year, and it made my Top 10 YA books in 2011. Guess who recommended the book? Sylvain Reynard did, and if you haven’t read it…you should.

This is Hope’s first guest post here, and I think you’ll enjoy the snippet she provided…

Thank you so much, Bookish Temptations, for having me on the blog today. I was so excited to learn the theme was Christmas, because I have a special holiday snippet from THE WILLOWS: HAVEN. For those who haven’t read the story, this scene involves our main character, Ashton, celebrating with her extended family. I hope you enjoy!

Scraps of Christmas paper dotted the floor like a patchwork quilt. Colored ribbons wound through wreaths of garland and snaked beneath the towering fir tree. It looked like a miniature tinsel bomb had gone off in the family room. A thirteen year-old Allie and I giggled as we lobbed handfuls of holiday refuse at each other. We ducked behind the loveseat and dove under the sofa table as my uncle, Harry, and my nanny, Miss Lynn, snapped pictures, their laughter ringing louder than mine.

“Girls, come sit by the fireplace.” Harry waved us over, a knowing grin on his face. “There’s one more special gift for each of you.”

Allie quickly dropped her cardboard-tube-turned-sword, signaling a cease-fire between us. Curiosity bubbled as I claimed the seat by the hearth. Allie plopped down beside me, her blonde ringlets in disarray, and smoothed the tangled curls back into place.

“What’d you get us, Mama?” Allie questioned, her eyes glowing with excitement.

“Patience, darling.” Miss Lynn laughed and shook her head. Her hands dipped into the front pockets of her apron, and she brandished two small boxes: one wrapped in pink sparkles and the other decorated in purple. She held out the presents, offering the first to her daughter.

Allie ripped the trimming from the package, making short work of its paper prison. She opened the clamshell lid and gasped.

“Mama, it’s beautiful!” She reached inside and fiddled with the ties holding something delicate and shiny in place. Finally, Allie lifted a charm bracelet and secured it around her wrist.

“A perfect fit.” Miss Lynn grinned, receiving an enthusiastic hug. She turned her gaze toward me. “Your turn, little lady.”

Breathing in, I tugged at the thin twine and paper, letting the pieces fall away. My fingertips brushed across the navy velvet before I opened the lid. A delicate chain wound through a teardrop-shaped locket. The silver gleamed against the light of the fire.

“Open it,” Harry encouraged.

I lifted the pendant and unfastened the catch on the front. A mariner’s compass lay nestled inside. The needle spun erratically, never hinting at a true North. My eyebrows fell, but I didn’t want to mention that it seemed to be broken.

“That will line out eventually.” Miss Lynn gestured to the pointer gone haywire. “This has been in your family for generations, so a few quirks are to be expected.” She winked and slipped the necklace over my head. “I’m sure you’ve learned by now that little in life is what it seems. Sometimes it takes a while for things to come together, but in the end, the beauty of discovery is found in the journey itself.”

“Thank you so much. This means the world to me.” I met her pale-green eyes and smiled.

“Know this, Ashton: no matter where in the world you go, remember that we’re always under the same sky. This will lead you to your place in life.”

Thank you Hope!

Later today we’ll have a giveaway from Hope for you to enter 🙂
