Fan Fic Friday: It’s All About Sequels…

So when I got it in my head that I wanted to do a post about sequels, I was so excited because I don’t read a lot of WIPs, but sequels seem to be the exception. There are some stories that totally own me, that I want to keep reading about these characters as much as possible. I love when authors are inspired to keep writing. It seems that I am not alone in this feeling, because when I asked Michelle and Deb24601 to share the sequels that they are reading, they felt the same way. GIVE ME MORE they said!! They were both very excited about telling everyone about these stories. *happy dance*

I should probably put a SPOILER warning here though, because if you haven’t read the first or original story, some of the plot might be given away. My hope is that if you like what you see here, you’ll read the original story, and share with the author that you found out about it, from here. Sharing is caring, right?

So I am going to be the good host, and let Michelle and Deb go first, then share my two WIPs at the end. There is a lot to talk about, so let’s get started…

Miss Michelle first..

**Waves hello**

Whew! Last week I was so nervous about submitting a review, but everyone was very kind.  I still have a lot to learn but I’m enjoying every minute!

This week, we’re talking SEQUELS!!  *using my best Ron Popeil voice* “But wait, there’s MORE!”

Now how many times have you finished a story and desperately wanted the writer to give you more? Well friends, you are not alone.

For my SEQUEL rec, I’m going old school.

A Rite of Passage by caracol

Summary: Bella and Edward are best friends. A story of self discovery and the loss of innocence. This story is about how two people deal with sex, love, trust, friendship all while growing up.

I love a great coming of age story and caracol does a brilliant job at creating a true high school mentality to Bella and Edward.  It’s listed under Romance/Humor but I think ANGST should be in there too!!  ~No, you’re not going to need a box of tissues.~  You get a sense of the story from Bella’s POV in the preface.

I know what anyone would expect out of a story like ours. ………….. We are about to graduate form high school. Just about to dive head on into our adult years, and this is our year of discovery. This is the story that I want to share. Of how this amazing and terrifying the world can be perceived, seized by us, by someone like us.

See what I mean?  It really captures you.  It’s about friendship, trust, maturing, and trying to figure it out with all the craziness that is high school. (KB: I don’t normally read AH high school stories, but this sounds interesting to me)

There’s tension:

“That’s bullshit…” He said visibly upset “You know what your problem is Bella?””No, but please enlighten me Edward” I said acidly.

“Your problem is that all our lives you have thought that I’m this spineless boy that does exactly what you tell him to do. And please spare me the whole crap about what a bad influence you have been on my life”

There’s snark:

“Alice told you huh?

“Yeah, she did… She and Rose think you’re on Ritalin, you know?””What did you say?” I asked with a smile.

“That you are just naturally insane…

But by the end, friendship and love prove to be their saving grace.

“Best bet is to end up being best friends then?” He asked.

“Yup. So I guess for that we’re covered.”

Do you want to know if they get their HEA???  Then you’re in luck because caracol gave us the sequel titled, The Way Back.

The Way Back banner

Summary: A story about becoming adult, dealing with your past and your future.

Caracol left us with B and E going off to college but the sequel starts out with a glimpse of B and E being together then BAM!  You got it… there is a break-up.  What makes this sequel unique is the way they find their way back to each other.

But our end hadn’t been bad at all, incredibly sad, but not terrible. It had lacked animosity.  Our end had been very calm: we flat lined without actually realizing what was going on.

Wait!  Don’t run!  It sounds sad but I promise it’s all good in the end.  I hope you’ll give them a read!

Until next week, happy reading!

Michelle

And up next is Deb…

Hey all! I was so excited when Katie approached me about contributing to this post featuring fic sequels. See, I tend to get obsessed with things – no, no it’s true, lol, and Katie knew one of my fic obsessions is a fantastic story called My Mate which has a newborn sequel (see what I did there?) called My Power!

You can read my original review of My Mate HERE. (KB: I really miss reading her reviews)

It’s no secret; I’m not reading as much fanfic as I used to. It’s rare for me to get crazy caught up in a fic these days, but when I do the story becomes like a great book, almost like a friend. I don’t want to let it go.

So when My Mate completed back in June, I missed it. The author (who is a complete sweetheart by the way!) had teased about outtakes and a possible sequel and I had my fingers crossed. My Mate was just so good: the fresh take on Bella and Edward, the dangerous world the author created and the gripping pace of the story. It stayed with me.

Fast forward to Jan 2. I wish I could go back and record my reaction to the ff notification of the sequel, My Power, popping up. There was squealing. I don’t remember what I was doing at the time but I know I dropped it, right then, threw some candy at the kids and read that first chapter immediately.

It did not disappoint.

One of the best things about a sequel is how the reader can be dropped right into the story because the characters and world are already known. PrincessRachael wastes no time getting started; My Power begins dramatically and dangerously. As with My Mate, PrincessRachael has again created an intriguing, unique premise, this time centred on the use of the vamp powers (Edward’s mind-reading, Alice’s precognition etc) to prevent a possible vampiric catastrophe. Or are they being manipulated for more nefarious purposes? I was hooked from the very first chapter and am loving the twice-weekly updates. Each is wonderfully written and packed with action, story-development or some of the best vamp lemons – ever.

A Note from PrincessRachael:

My Power is Edward’s story – while My Mate was more about Bella. And just like My Mate, the sequel has lots of hot vampire teeth-biting/mating like last time. I’ve got some strange, obsession with sharp teeth and sex – if that kind of thing bothers you, don’t proceed further. Also warning – there are graphic lemons, dark themes and bloody situations in My Power.

**Please note: It’s not necessary for you to have read My Mate before reading My Power – but it will definitely give you a stronger feel for my Edward and Bella. It will also help you understand the specifics of being ‘mated’.

Hang on and I hope you enjoy the ride.

Have I mentioned one of my absolute favourite things about My Mate/My Power? This Edward. *stares at a wall for a few minutes* He’s… intense. Primal. Refined and animalistic at the same time. *sighs dreamily* His relationship with Bella is swoony and hot and just… gah.

Excerpted from Chapter Five, My Power:

“You want it, don’t you?” he whispered fiercely, his hips relentless. “You know I could just keep you here on the edge and never let either of us fall.” His thrusting became erratic, broken rhythms and hard shoves. “You belong to me, beautiful girl. I control you but only because you own my soul. It is you behind every thought, every impulse … everything I crave. Tell me you know that!”

She wrapped her other leg around his thigh and crossed her arms around his neck as his confessed pleas rocked through her. While he did indeed control her body, she held the same power over his, perhaps on an even more intense level. He held her needs and her cares above his own. They were inextricably bound.

One word left her tightly pressed lips.

“Yes.”

*fans self*

Now, along with “Gah” I appreciate a good, dark story. These are very dark. There is blood, there is death, there is pain and screaming and revenge. Real vamp stuff, really well done. I can’t recommend these stories highly enough. (KB: So… I don’t think I’ll be waiting for this to be completed. I am going to start reading this now.)

O.K. My turn! My turn! It will come as no surprise to anyone reading this that many of us here at BT love Georgeygirl’s work. I dedicated a whole post to her stories, The Weight of Words and The Tongue Set Free here. Tamie even mentioned on her End of the year favorite posts how much she loves GG here. So I was thrilled to read her final installment The Swan Files.

As much as I would love to get into the head of this particular Edward, or Sailor, as we like to call him, and read the whole story from his POV, GG didn’t do that exactly. She instead did something more unique. In The Tongue Set Free, Edward decides to give to Bella some reading material for her trip to England to visit family, before joining him at Rose and Emmett’s wedding. This would be their first time being a part after finally moving forward in their relationship when Bella graduated. Edward had apparently been writing about Bella in his journal from their very first encounter as TA/student, and then moved on to writing to her directly later as a friendship developed between them, but of course it was so much more than that. Their romantic relationship had to be put on hold, because of a non-fraternizing rule at the university. If you love UST as much as I do, then start reading The Weight of Words immediately, because it is full to the brim with it. So fantastically good!! Anyway, The Swan Files is Edward’s thoughts and words about himself and Bella from the beginning. It is very revealing, and I don’t know how it is possible, but I fell more in love with this Edward, after reading this. Here is an exert from Chapter 18 A Thousand Kisses. It is actually a scene from TWoW, where Rose instigates a way for Edward and Bella to be alone for the afternoon at her home. Let’s just say, they kind of get carried away, but I don’t blame them a bit, and they don’t technically “cross the line”. Again it’s Edward’s thoughts about their intimate time together. *swoon*

Do you want to know what I love, Isabella? I’ll tell you. In no particular order—neither chronological nor “most to least” (nor vice versa, for that matter. Don’t look for logic, for there is none)—these are the things I love:

Your lips.

Your hands.

Polka dots—yellow polka dots, in particular—I adore.

Your breasts. God, don’t get me started…

Your touch.

Your kisses. There are never enough. Ten is not enough. A hundred wouldn’t be enough…a thousand…never enough.

Your incredible ass.

Did I mention your breasts? Ah yes, I see I did. Moving on.

The tiny silk bow at the top of your panties.

Your tongue.

YOUR YOGA PANTS.

The way your eyelashes fluttered and your eyebrows scrunched together this afternoon in the heat of the moment…in the heat of those few wonderful moments.

Your hair, tumbling across my chest as you slept. (I’m looking at a picture of this on my phone as I type. You don’t know I took this picture, but you’ll find out on Friday…)

Your lovely nipples, which I realize brings the topic around to your breasts again, but I hate to speak in vague generalities. Allow me to elucidate: you have the most perfectly delicious, pink nipples…

The arch of your back as I kissed your breasts for the first time, and the way you slipped your fingers through my hair, tugging hard.

Your lips forming my name as I touched you.

Your eyes.

The way your breath tickled my neck as you gasped with pleasure.

Your nails! I’ll never tire of the feel of your nails on my back. Exquisite.

Your arms. Your legs. Your feet. Your toes. Your cheeks. Your ears. Your perky nose….(that rhyme was entirely unintended, by the way—albeit terribly “adorable,” as you’re fond of calling me…).

All of this. All of this and more, I love.

You.

I love you, my beautiful Isabella.

(I’m also a huge fan of Rosalie. I’m sure you’re with me on that. She gave us a precious gift today, wouldn’t you say?)

I do have good news, for those of you who only read completed stories. GG is nearly done with this, only a few chapters left. When I think about that, I kind of tear up a little, because I will truly miss these characters so much. *heavy sigh* Oh, and somebody needs to make a banner for this story, right quick…

My other rec is for Grasping Darkness, Hungry Light, by KiyaRaven. This is the part where I seriously want to add sound effects to the blog. *SPOILER ALERT*

Grasping Darkness banner

The original story, Grasping Darkness, is a great AU story with an interesting twist at the end for both Edward and Bella. The sequel is the continuation of Edward dealing with his “new” self. I have always been a huge fan of KiyaRaven, because her stories have great humor in them. Her characters are always smart and funny. This Edward POV story has been hilarious from day one.

So, umm, Edward is now more human than vampire, and he is relearning how to do everything, since it’s been awhile (over hundred years, right?) that he’s experienced some of these feelings and sensations in his body. While I don’t normally think of “bodily functions” as humorous, because I’m not a ten year old boy, *checking to confirm*, this scene from Chapter 2, First Steps, made me laugh out loud, for like a good 5 minutes.

My father stood beside me, quiet and patient.

“Do you … remember … how to …?” He gestured to the porcelain bowl.

“I think so.” I had no idea. Regardless, I wasn’t going to admit that to him.

He gently patted my shoulder. “All right then, I’ll leave you to it. Call out if you need anything.”

I had no idea what I could possibly need while urinating, but I still nodded. “Sure.”

He closed the door behind him, and I stared at the toilet, anxious about my first waste expulsion as a born-again human. Would it hurt? What if I didn’t work properly? This was the first big test of my new humanity, and I wanted it to go well.

It’s urinating, Cullen, not an exam. Stop procrastinating and do it.

The growing pressure agreed.

I shifted from one foot to the other and wished it away so I could postpone it as long as possible. Unfortunately, I only succeeded in making it more urgent.

“Dammit.”

With a sigh of resignation I pulled myself from my boxers and aimed deep into the bowl.

Nothing happened.

Okay. What do I do now?

I jiggled my penis, urging it to urinate, which is completely ridiculous considering it has absolutely no sentient control over my bladder. I had two medical degrees. I knew this. And still I continued to do it before muttering obscenities under my breath when it completely failed to yield results.

“Son?” Carlisle’s voice was right outside the door. “Everything okay?”

“Fine,” I said and jiggled again. “Just … fine.”

I gritted my teeth as the pressure became uncomfortable, and I wracked my brain to try and remember how I used to do it. I mean, before I was turned, I had seventeen years of effortless urination. Surely some part of me remembered how.

I widened my stance, trying to appear confident and assured. My bladder wasn’t buying it. The discomfort increased. Now, it bordered on painful.

“Son?”

“Dammit, Carlisle, I’m fine!”

He paused before saying, “You might want to turn on the tap. Sometimes hearing running water helps.”

I dropped my head back and sighed. At this point, I was willing to try anything.

I leaned over and turned on the faucet then closed my eyes to concentrate on the sound. It did make my desire to urinate increase, but still nothing happened.

Great. I’m a reverse-incontinent.

“Edward?”

Bella.

“Do you need help?”

I most certainly didn’t need Isabella in here with me. One thing I remembered from my previous time as a human was that it was almost impossible to urinate with an erection, and if she came within three feet of my penis, that was pretty much a forgone conclusion.

“I’m okay,” I said, trying to sound like the pressure of my bladder wasn’t choking me. “Just give me a few minutes.”

“You just have to let go,” she said, her voice quieter. “Don’t try too hard. Just relax.”

Even hearing her voice was causing an unwanted stiffness, but her words made sense, so I tried to relax as I listened to the running water. I visualized letting go of the tension in my inner muscles.

Come on, Edward. You can do this. Let go. Let go. Let go.

For a moment, all my muscles tightened even more, and I stopped breathing as a huge lance of pain pierced my abdomen. But then, miraculously, the floodgates opened, and I moaned in satisfaction as the urine poured out of me.

“Ohhhhh, God, yes.”

It was indescribably good.

The pleasure that accompanied my urination was powerful, and as I continued to empty my bladder, I heard a light round of applause from the other side of the door.

Eventually, I ran dry, so I finished up, flushed, and washed my hands, proud and satisfied.

When I shuffled painfully from the bathroom, my entire family was in a line holding up score cards. Bella stood beside them, shaking her head in disapproval but unable to hide her smile.

Carlisle and Esme had given me tens. Jasper a nine, Rose and Emmett, eights. Alice was just holding a card with an enormous smiley face next to a toilet.

I had to laugh.

Unfortunately, laughing was extremely painful.

Kiya kills me, but if you’ve read The Screamers and Diva Diaries, this should be of no surprise to you.

Please comment if you want on what stories you’re reading that you would love to have a sequel for or if you are reading one that you love right now.

Have a great Super Bowl weekend to our American readers. That is a holiday here right? LOL

I was truly hoping for a sequel to La Dolce Vita by johnnyboy7. He was going to do one, but couldn’t then think of a plausible plot to justify it.
I would also love a sequels to Bringing Home Bella & Roar Like a Lion by counselor (both period fics). I just wanted more. More of these characters & more of the style, their lives, those periods of time … just more!
