Elena and Tamie review: Effortless by S.C Stephens

The synopsis:

After being caught in the middle of a love triangle which led to a devastating betrayal, Kiera pledged to learn from the mistakes she’d made. She was determined to never again inflict that kind of pain on anyone, especially the soulful, talented man who held her heart. But life offers new challenges for every relationship, and when Kiera’s love is put to the ultimate test, will it survive? Love is easy . . . trust is hard.

Elena’s review:

As soon as I finished Thoughtless, I was eager to see where the relationship between Keira and Kellan was heading. In Thoughtless we saw them falling in love against all odds, making mistakes, but also making promises to each other.  In Effortless, we continue to follow their passionate love story, with all its twists and turns, and I only wanted to keep reading.

Is the love between Kellan and Keira strong enough to survive life’s hurdles? Are they ready to fight for it? These were the questions that kept nagging my mind at the end of Thoughtless, and I have to say that Effortless didn’t let me down.

Keira and Kellan learn to trust each other and to work on that trust, which is fundamental in a relationship. New and exciting horizons open for both of them, and they have to face new challenges, that put their love to a test.

Their story started with a betrayal. They both betrayed a person they loved. This played a huge role when it came to trusting each other, and most of the times it wasn’t easy. But the results were definitely worth it.

I loved Kellan even more this time around. He’s impossible to resist, with his charm and compelling personality. Thanks to Keira he feels loved and cherished, for the first time in his life, but he still doesn’t feel worthy of love. Doubts and insecurities still lurk and there are some scenes where his vulnerability tugged at my heartstrings.

While I had several issues with Keira in Thoughtless, in Effortless she goes through quite the change. She learns from her previous mistakes and she matures. She also helps Kellan deal with a part of his past that resurfaces with a stenght and determination I didn’t expect from her.

Besides Kellan and Keira’s passionate love story, of course, what I also liked about Effortless is that it shows how strong family bonds can be, even when we don’t realize it. And how friendship and trust can change us within, for the better.

Reckless is now one of my most anticipated books and I can’t wait to spend more time with Kellan and Keira! 😉

I give Effortless 4 stars.

Some of my favorite passages:

“I love you more.  I love you enough to let you go and live your dream.” I tilted my head and shrugged. “Don’t you see….? I love you more.”

He smiled softly and I brushed some hair off his forehead. Running the backs of my fingers down his cheek, I whispered, “And, yes, I will miss you, more than you could possibly imagine, but I know that you have to do this Kellan.  And you know it too.”

Stubbornly he shook his head. “No, I know that I have to be with you.  Everything else is just …. details.” –Effortless

“But, if for some reason we’re not closer, if something has gotten between us, please, I’m begging you…don’t give up on me. Stay. Stay with me. Work it out with me. Just don’t leave me…please.” –Effortless

“…That I’m yours- That you can take me anywhere, anytime, any way… That you own every piece of me.”   —Effortless

Tamie’s review: I really have to say yet again that normally I am not a huge lover of a lot of angst, and Thoughtless was angst from start to finish…and yet I absolutely floved it. I was really a little scared to read Effortless to be honest, because I thought it would probably have just as much angst as the first book did. I don’t know if I was a little more immune, or if it was toned down, but I didn’t feel like I was about to have a heart attack every few pages.

Did I enjoy it as much?!? O…you betcha. I love the way S.C. Stephens tells a story, and it’s certainly no secret that I love Kellan with all my heart…and a few other body parts as well 😉 I won’t lie and say that there aren’t a lot of complications…seriously…that wouldn’t be Kellan and Kiera if things just progressed without some major bumps in the road…and ok…it would be kind of boring if that happened. Believe me when I say that Effortless is anything but!

This is one of those stories that I wish could go on forever, and so I am on pins and needles waiting for the third book. Thank heavens that the wait is almost over.

My rating for Effortless by S.C. Stephens:

An honest to goodness WTF are you waiting for, go read it right now 5 hearts!

I was hoping you guys would review this book, because I was not sure about going back to all of their angst after the first book. I am def. leaning towards reading the second book now. Not sure when I’ll get to it or when I’ll feel emotionally prepared to dive back in, but I’ll do it for sure. 🙂

I loved Effortless. I was also concerned about the angst level. I was so distraught after Thoughtless, I actually emailed Tamie and asked for help because I couldn’t figure out how to review the book. I was so upset, I couldn’t tell if I liked it or not! But, the glutton for punishment I am, I had to know how their story progressed. I am SO glad I did. I loved that SC Stephens really had the characters deal with the fallout of the way their relationship started. It was much more fulfilling over all. Plus, I loved that in this book we got to know some side characters even better. LOVED Anna and Griffin. They provided some awesome comic relief and also, Griffin had some of the most vulnerable heartbreaking moments too. He was definitely worthy of an “Awww” or two.

I did like Keira better in this book. She did do alot of growing up in her and Kellan’s time apart. However, she did slip back a few times and I thought I was going to have to slap her. Old habits, old dog/new tricks etc. I believe she’s learning how to be a partner in a relationship and not just allowing someone to completely take care of her.

Oh and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that the love scenes were off the charts hot! While Keira is learning how to be a partner, she’s also coming out of her shell and Kellan is a willing, uber hot teacher and participant. I can’t wait for Reckless. I have it pre-ordered. Thoughtless was hard but the ride has been more than worth it. (Thanks again, Tamie for talking me down.)

    Some of my faves:
“I stood aside and motioned for him to come in while she sputtered, ‘Denny? What the hell? Did I wake up three years ago?’ She looked over to the window with a view of lake Union. ‘God, we’re not back home in Ohio, are we?’ Her brow bunched into a perfectly adorable pout. ‘Because I cannot go through living with Mom and Dad again, Kiera.'”

“That’s what you get when your relationship starts by betraying someone – a never-ending well of doubt. If we could do it to someone, it could be done to us.”

“And I was happy…and devastatingly sad too. It was hard, watching someone you’d loved once loving someone else, and loving them more than they ever loved you.”

“Sometimes family was the cruelest form of love there was, for no one could hurt you more than the people who created you.”

My favorite scenes were Kellan in Ohio for Christmas, specifically getting out of Kiera’s room before her Dad found him. Hilarious.

The love scene at the going away party…super hot.

    Awesome awesome awesome book. 🙂

      Thank you for this!
I agree with what you said. I too loved Anna and Griffin and I certainly didn’t expect what happened 😉 But I was pleasantly surprised by how they both handled it.
The love scenes are beautiful, indeed 😉
I loved the Christmas scene you mentioned. Definitely one of my favorites in the whole book 😉

I loved this book too!! I did grow to like Keira as well this time around. I know she was young and confused in the first book but she made me so mad with her wishy-washy-ness!! She did hurt Denny and Kellan so much in book one. But now in book two, she knows what she did and Kellan is her soul mate so she did what she had to do to be with him. I loved Effortless! I can’t wait for Reckless! I just love Kellan!!! OH MMM GEE!!! I Love him!! That first chapter of the sneak peek we were given has me anxious!! I really love Griffin and Anna too! Their little side story has so much potential! I hope she is serious about a spin-off! I have such a hard time letting characters I love go! I love to read about them forever! Which is why I am such fan of Twilight fan-fiction and Pride and Prejudice spinoffs! Thanks Tamie and Elena!

I completely agree with you, Margie! I’d love it if we had an Anna & Griffin spin-off.
