I can’t believe that it’s Friday again…My two girls have stepped up for me this week, since I have fallen behind on my fan fic reading with the move. I am so glad to have Michelle back reccing what she has been reading, and Annie has the best taste. Neither girls have steered us wrong yet, right?
I will leave them to it…
Michelle is up first. 🙂
Have you ever read a one shot entry you loooooved so much and you wish the author would give you more? Yeah? Me too!
As luck would have it, there was a The Heart of Country contest with lots of great picture prompts and MrsSpaceCowboy selected picture number 4! That’s right, you can read all about Cowboyward in her now extended fic Down Home!
There’s skinny-dipping, beauty queens, line dancing, and one cocky Edward who is smirky, sweet, and hunky all at the same time. And Bella is no pushover! She’s got sass and her own dreams of the future.
Fic Summary: Sometimes, everything you’re looking for ends up being right where you left it. *Entry for The Heart of Country Contest. 1st Place Silver Spur Award Public Vote, 2nd Place Silver Spur Award Judges Choice, 1st Place Gentlemen Wear White Award (Swooniest Fella) Public Vote and Judges Choice, 2nd Place Hay Ride Award Judges Choice.
Both Edward and Bella are visiting home during a college break and run into one another and the plot goes from there.
“You’ll never guess who I ran into the other day,” Tanya says. “You’re not the only one home for a visit.”
“I’m sure you’re going to tell me,” I answer. I could name half the town, and she’d let me. I can find out much quicker with silence.
The name alone doesn’t sound like much, but the boy behind it is something else. At least, he was. His momma raised him with manners, even though he’s cocky like his daddy. Being a doctor’s kid, having a nice GPA, a mischievous side, and knowing how to party made him a god at Quitman High. His good looks only sped his ascent to the top of the high school food chain.
He’s that boy; the one (I never really had) that got away, the boy I turned down.
And he has never let me forget it.
“Oh, yeah?” I try to sound casual. “What’s he been up to?”
“I don’t know, but he asked about you.”
“He did not. We haven’t spoken in years.”
“He sure did, and honey, he is lookin’ fine. F-I-N-E fine.”
“Here, let me get the door for you.” Any other voice, combined with a hand on my arm, would’ve made me jump a mile high, but I’d recognize his tone and his touch even if I were blindfolded.
I turn on the step, hoping to find out exactly what F-I-N-E looks like these days. “Hey, Edward.”………
Throughout the story, you feel like you’re in a small town with a country feel thanks to MrsSpaceCowboys’ writing style.
I remember how excited he’d been when his granddaddy gave it to him for his sixteenth. I also remember how mad and moody he’d been when a deer ran out in front of it and caused his first wreck the very next week.
“….You can’t take this beast boggin’. If you want to go muddin’, I’ll take you in my Jeep.”
“Good night?” Momma asks, turning on the light in the corner next to her chair…..I was just making sure you got home alright. You’re a grown woman now, capable of making your own decisions.” She walks over to me and leans in to kiss me on the cheek before leaving me at the bottom of the stairs feeling like a lost little girl with a crush instead of the woman she thinks I am. “I’ll let you skip Sunday School, but you’ll be at church.”
“What about Daddy?”… “I’ll handle your daddy.”
I love a good story about Bella and Edward, but having other characters that support and enhance the story is a bonus! Renee, Charlie, Tayna and the regulars help drive the story along as well.
I also like a well-mannered country-boy Edward:
“Come out on the lake with me this afternoon.”
“Are we going fishin’ again?” I ask petulantly.
“No. I’d like to take you out, maybe have supper on the boat and go for a swim.
“I don’t know,” I tell him….”You wanted to kiss me last night. I know you did. When we were on the dock, it wasn’t just the way you looked at me. I could feel it.”
“Of course I wanted to kiss you.” … “I don’t really want our first kiss to be associated with pickin’ you up in a bar. I’m tryin’ to ask you on a date first, Bella. Is that so awful?”
I don’t think it’s awful at all! Say “yes” Bella!
Next time you’re in the mood for a cold one and some country-fried steak, go check out DOWN HOME by MrsSpaceCowboy.
Now it’s Miss Annie’s turn…
Beneath This Sky by Bedelia
Nineteen years ago, time unraveled. In a changed world, Bella fights to save a man from the past and a girl with no future. AU.
I hesitate to rec this WIP since the updates seem to be slowing down, but hey, what’s life without a little risk? (Is that an Edward quote?)
In the near future, there has been a series of destructive storms that snatch people from the past and pull them through time. These people are blamed for the storms and hunted. They often suffer from a fatal disease caused and made worse by the storms. One of these people is Bella’s best friend Jessica. Bella is secretly working with a group of vampires to find the cause of the storms and a cure for the disease. One day, another group of vampires joins them, along with a human.
(excerpt from chapters 2 & 3)
Garrett swept the female into a hug, her blond curls almost hiding his smile as he spun her around. Emmett snapped out of his daze and greeted the remaining vampire with a clap of his shoulder. Only the human was left out of the reunion. As he strode toward Bella and Jessica, his lopsided grin made another appearance. Though Bella had lowered the gun, it still occupied herright hand. He offered her his left.
“Hello,” he said. “I’m Edward.” Edward’s hands told the story of his profession. Years of engine grease had settled into the lines, creating a map of repaired machines. Another story began at his wrists, swirling up to his elbows in bright patches of color.
The pictures etched into his skin spoke a language Bella didn’t yet know. As his hand hovered in the air between them, her gaze traced his tattoos: a frayed rope, a seashell, a city skyline, a pair of initials, a bird in flight.
“Hi,” Jessica said, stepping in to accept the handshake. “I’m Jessica. This is my friend, Bella. Don’t worry; she won’t shoot. Bella, seriously, put the gun away.”
Half laughing. Half scoffing, Bella kept her weapon right where it was, though she did accept Edward’s hand when he offered it a second time. Jessica smiled at him, doing that little lip biting thing she did when trying to make a guy think she was cute and vulnerable.
Yep. Bella’s smart and kind of a badass. Edward’s sweet and likes to bake. Swoon!
Usually I pass the darker, post apocalyptic, AU fics on to Debb, but the time travel aspect caught my interest and wouldn’t let go. Bedelia has created a fascinating world and I want to know if they figure out the storms, and if they do, what happens to the people that have time traveled. Also it’s an AU where Edward isn’t a vampire… yet? Ooh! Give it a try.
Thanks girls!! I’ll be back next week for sure…
