Fan Fiction Friday: Dirt Roads and The Boy at Table 7

This week my favorite girls are sharing what they’ve been reading lately. Someone in the comments last week asked about more funny stories, after enjoying The Practicum so much. Well, it looks like your wish is being granted!! Both stories featured here this week are funny and sweet ones.

Now that you all know we do read every comment, please share what you’re reading and ask or request away…

I’ll be doing an update of sorts at the end too. 🙂

Annie goes first this time…

Dirt Roads by winehoes (aka iambeagle and livie79) *Complete*

Fic summary: Trucker hats, possums, and dirt roads. Shenanigans ensue. Is there really less trouble in the country, or are the kids just better at not getting caught?

Since I will pretty much read anything that iambeagle posts, I wondered why I hadn’t read this as a WIP, even the first chapter seemed familiar, then I remembered. At the time, I saw “trucker hat” in the summary and thought Edward would be a trucker. When I learned he wasn’t, I was too disappointed to continue. I may still be bitter. Maybe winehoes will make it up to me. **coughtruckerwardficnowcough**

Dirt Roads is a comedy. The kind where you can’t help grinning while you read. Charlie moves his out of control daughter Bella from New York City to the small town of Intercourse, Alabama. The name of the town should give you a clue about the tone of the story. (KB: In Michigan, there’s a town called Intercourse too! As well as, Climax. *giggle*)

Excerpt from the Prologue:

Terrified as I was, I couldn’t seem to tear my eyes from the group of people pulling into my driveway, in a truck with wheels as tall as me, and a rebel flag flying off the back. I couldn’t bring myself to process that said people were now getting out of the monstrosity and heading straight towards me. I felt like I was watching a scene from the Dukes of Hazard with all the cut off jean shorts, cowboy hats, and plaid shirts.

But most of all, I couldn’t understand why, for the life of me, the boy with the craziest hair I’d ever seen sticking out from underneath his truckers hat made me want to straddle the railing on the porch and scream “yeehaw, giddy up boy!”.

Edward is the first person Bella meets and he introduces her to the rest of the quirky Intercourse gang. They decide to show her how kids who live in the county entertain themselves. They enjoy quite a bit of herbal refreshment if you know what I’m saying. Bella has a bit of a verbal filter problem and feels a bit baffled by small town life. All these things combine to bring us a cornucopia of hilarity. Good thing sweet but smart ass Edward is there to help her figure it out. There is a tiny bit of angst in the middle but things sort themselves out pretty quickly. This is one of those stories that you don’t want to end. Oh, and their version of the meadow made me laugh so hard I got looks of concern from my family.

Now Michelle’s is up…

I’m back again this week with another slow and sweet story.  Last week, was rock-climbing Edward and Bella in Chalk by Honeybeemeadows.  This week I’m serving up blue-collar Edward and hard working Bella.

Fic Summary: Life for a young waitress can be pretty mundane. The highlight of Bella’s week was the lunchtime visit from the three sexy mechanics from across the street. Then one day there was a little boy at her table left alone.

Sure, I like the CEOwards, Richwards, and so on, but an Edward that works with his hands and has a big heart is always a win in my book.

It all starts when Jessica, Tanya, and Eric give Bella the scoop about their favorite lunch customers.

“Oh, here we go.”

“The grease monkeys are on lunch?”

“And headed our way.”

“Mmm. This is the best part of my week. Except for the part where they sit down. And speak.”

And of course Edward is the new cute dish. <<Bad diner pun!

KB: Apple Pie ala Mode is one of my favorite desserts. Mmmm....

But it seems Bella has her eye on another cute customer who keeps appearing and disappearing from her sights.  And this brings us to Benjamin.

The interaction between Bella and Benjamin is so natural and charming.  He knows how to mind his manners and always makes sure to leave a tip.

“Do you have apple pie here?..” “Can I have a really big slice?” he asked brightly. “And milk. Please.”

“I have money, see? I’m supposed to have something to eat, and do my homework, and not be trouble.” He pulled out his school notebook as if to emphasize his point.

Unfortunately, Benji goes missing……

Each day, shortly after three, Benjamin would appear just minutes before the afternoon rush. He always sat at table seven without waiting to be seated.

The week came and went. Bella worried all that weekend, wondering if she was doing the right thing, not calling the police.

But Monday afternoon came and went with no sign of Benjamin.

Don’t freak out!!  LyricalKris always has a plan for her characters.  Plus, during this timeout from Benjamin, Bella and Edward get to know each other a little better….. with a little flirting.  Well, Edward flirts; Bella seems a little shy and smitten.

Benjamin comes back but not under the best circumstances and that’s where we see Edward’s trouble.  Life has thrown him a few curveballs.

“What happened?” Edward pulled back, looking the boy over for any injury. “Are you okay? What happened?”

Bella found her voice. “There was a man in the booth with him that scared him. He’s fine, just shaken,” she explained.

“Are you kidding me? You let a seven-year-old kid wander around on his own?” She crossed her arms. “What kind of parent does that?” Do you realize that because he was alone, some damn creeper was talking to him? He was trying to get Benjamin to leave with him, Edward.”

“It’s a long story. I just… ” “Can you give me a break? Please? It’s just been hard recently.” He laughed without any humor. “Well, harder than usual, I guess. I’m a good father, Bella. I know it might not seem like that from where you’re standing, but my boy is everything to me….”

Does Bella give Edward the chance to explain?  Since The Boy at Table Seven is a WIP, you’ll have to put it on your alerts to find out!!  It’s already at ten chapters and the author is very good about completing her fics.

I hope you get a chance to check it out!

See ya next week.

Since I know that quite a few of you like to read completed stories, I thought I would let you know that two stories we recently recd. here, are now completed.

My Power by Princess Rachel, the sequel to My Mate is now complete. Debb reviewed both stories here and here. This is an amazing AU story that should not be missed!!

Grasping Darkness, Hungry Light by Kiya Raven is not marked complete but in her A/N for the last chapter, she says that the story is done for now. This is the sequel to Grasping Darkness. It is ending at an appropriate spot, so it’s all good. You can read our reviews for both here and here. Another great AU story.

Happy Friday ladies!! Great recs, Annie you had me at “herbal refreshments” and “hilarity”. 😉

I’ve been on another vamp bender (this is a becoming a habit lol) and recently read Tempt My Tongue by Savage. Jeez that was intense and not for the faint of heart. I actually forbid (forbade?) Annie to read it. lol

    • abinar says:

That’s saying something because she tried to get me to read all these dark ones like Goodnight Noises Everywhere and The Fallout. I started The Fallout and ran screaming. LOL (I would have kept going if she had started With Teeth AS PER OUR AGREEMENT. *pointed look*)

    • katiebirdie says:

Oh Debb! I just started reading The House of the Horde by Raggdoll. Really creepy good. Did you know she’s going to do a sequel to Lions Eat Lambs? 🙂

I didnt think The Fallout was that scary or creepy, just cool and different. Just saying.

And woman, With Teeth, so worth the angst. Again, just saying. xxoo

      • deb24601 says:

I started it today!! Agree, The Fallout is more like Lost… interesting, intriguing, not “scary”. I don’t know the other two Katie, I’ll look them up though. They sound good. xo

I loved Tempt my Tongue. I thought Edward’s thoughts were hilarious, like when he wanted to eat the librarian, because she was an idiot. LOL but you’re right, parts of the story are not for the faint of heart.

Have you read Hide and Drink by Savage?

  3. Lucia says:
