Gel Reviews: Out of the Shadows and into the Darkness by Senta Holland

The synopsis:

A deeply felt and superbly written BDSM love story, Senta Holland’s ‘Out of the Shadows’ explores the beautiful darkness in seven bedrooms.
You’ve been enthralled by ‘The Bride Stripped Bare’ and ‘The Secret Diary of a Submissive’, now prepare to devour ‘Out of the Shadows’.

Senta, a thirty something Londoner, travels around the planet looking for the man who can match her. The one she finds is her ′Nai′, a high society American in Asia. Senta′s story is both complicated and made more exciting by the fact that it unfolds in the dark world of BDSM, a world that can be hostile to single, independent females.

Highly erotic, deeply romantic, funny, heartfelt and beautifully tragic, this book shows the BDSM experience from the inside out, as reality, not just fantasy. Above all it is an intelligent, insightful and deeply sensitive love story that will take you to places beyond your wildest dreams and open up the most secret aspects of your erotic identity. It will make you lust, think, feel and cry. Senta′s message to her readers is passionate and clear: Never give up looking for your true sexuality.

My review:

Out of the Shadows is not your typical Erotica/BDSM novel. I won’t even actually call it a novel, it’s an experience. I found myself enthralled by the author’s sophisticated style of writing. It’s almost lyrical, it’s wordy and poetically written.

When I received the copy in exchange for an honest review and realized it was a heavy BDSM with no HEA I was a bit hesitant. The BDSM thing is okay with me but without HEA not so much. I took the risk, thank goodness because of my curiosity, and let me say that it’s worth it. The synopsis said enough of what’s inside the story. I enjoyed Senta’s journey in search for her perfect match in finding and exploring her sexuality.

I guess I can say that I might have wished for a different ending but we’re talking about real life drama. In real life, anything can happen. It’s not always “they live happily ever after”, right?! It is a very deep love story, a Dom and sub relationship and it’s about a relationship to oneself. Yes, it’s a deep journey of desire, love, courage, hope and much, much more.

It is definitely an eye opener and you will discover a lot of things that you didn’t even think existed. It took me quite awhile to finish the book because at some parts I felt literally sucked and needed to pause for a while. I cannot adequately put my thoughts into words, and you just simply needed to read it for you to fully understand. I admit that I am a poet at heart, and this is the reason I find it so much better than the others out there.

If you have an open mind and you are ready for a wild adventure, I definitely recommend that you read this. If you wanted a glimpse on how it feels and what it’s like to be living the lifestyle this is a masterpiece written for you.

A blushing 4.5 stars.

  1. Wow it was sad just to read your review !! the sadist line was ” we will live together, Not as man and wife but Dom and Sub !! No happy ending can’t do it !!! Maybe down the road but not right now . I have read a book ” Captive in the dark by : C.J. Roberts ” . I had to stop every so often because it to was hard to read ( emotions and theme ) !!! But thanks for the review !!!

Thank you Gelytayz for this fabulous and insightful review. Love stories are about love – and love can take many shapes. I celebrate the beautiful Darkness.
(btw the end has been described by one reviewer as ‘perfect after-care’…)
My book is unconventional but again, so is love…
HarperCollins are now pulling out al the stops to support my book as a break-out novel which is a great honour.
Thank you again Gel – and we’ve had a lot of new US fans since your review came out.
