Today I have the great pleasure to welcome Charles Sheehan Miles to Bookish Temptations. He’s the author of Just Remember To Breathe and The Last Hour, two books that I absolutely LOVED (you can find my reviews here and here). He’s an amazing writer, whose writing captures you completely. His new book, Nocturne, has just been released and I had the chance to ask Charles a few questions.
Let’s see what he told me…
Charles: First, I wanted to say thanks so much for interviewing me for your blog!
Elena: Thank you Charles for agreeing to do this interview! It’s a pleasure to have you here. The Thompson sisters series is now one of my favorite series. How did you come up with the different story lines? Was there something in particular that inspired you to write about them?
Charles: In some ways, each of the Thompson sisters novels is based out of personal experience, though all of them touch on different aspects of life. Alex and Dylan’s story was very loosely based off my first love. Ray’s need for redemption came out of my own feelings about the Gulf War. The family issues which pervade all three novels are based out of emotional experiences I’ve had. Generally I start a story with a character and a situation, then I work backward, trying to figure out how they ended up there. That generates ideas, and next thing I know, I’ve got a story.
Elena: In the Thompson Sisters series you touch on the subject of war and its consequences and I read that you work in veterans outreach. How does this experience influence your writing?
Charles: My war experiences have had a huge influence on my writing and my professional career over the years. Everything we go through… positive, negative, all experiences … they help add up to the people we are. And for a novelist, that’s how I shape my stories… with my own emotions, my own fears, my own joys.
Elena: What did propel you to become an author?
Charles: I’ve always wanted to be an author, I wrote my first book in the seventh grade nearly thirty years ago. So now I’m living out my life long dream.
Elena: Congratulations on the release of Nocturne! How did your collaboration with author Andrea Randall come about?
Charles: Andrea and I are both members of a small critique group, and when I was writing The Last Hour, she was writing In the Stillness. Both of us found that our writing had a tremendous amount in common, in both our styles and our writing process. I’d never considered writing with anyone before, but I changed my mind through this process. We talked about it, brainstormed some ideas, and got started.
Elena: Can you tell us something about your future projects?
Charles: I have several projects in the works, including a Thompson Sisters novella which will be out in a month or so. After that, the Thompson Sisters is likely to take off in a slightly different direction… the next installments won’t be standalone novels, it will be a trilogy. The reason is that Andrea, Sarah and Jessica’s stories, along with their mother, are very tightly interwoven. I think people are going to be very surprised by the direction the series is taking. I’m really excited about the project: it’s going to take all of my writing skill and then some to carry it off the way I want, and I love a challenge. I’d look for the first installment by the end of 2013.
Thank you so much, Charles, for this interview, and I can’t wait for The Thompson Sisters novella and for the new trilogy!
