We are thrilled and honored to be a part of the Promise Light Me blog tour!! Katiebird and Tamie were given an ARC of the book by the author for the tour, and will give an honest review.
I should probably talk a little about the first book, Promise Me Darkness first, since that is where the story begins. Tamie also had a chance to read the first book, so she will share her thoughts as well.
I honestly had no idea what I was getting into when I started the first book. What an intense horror-filled ride. The first part was so tame compared to the rest of the book. I kept thinking that the book was mislabeled as post-apocalyptic. But when everything went to hell, there were times when I had to look away or even read through my fingers in fear.
So the premise of the story is that the United States is attacked by a foreign country, and all power is gone. The main characters, Maddie, Ryder, Eva, and Brody are away from their homes when the attack happens. They make the torturous trip back, where the story takes a very violent path.
Maddie and Ryder are childhood friends who finally admit and act on the intense feelings they have for each other, before the world goes into chaos. This was the first part that I mentioned before that was so different.
Unfortunately, the love scenes and chemistry between the main characters weren’t enough for me, to balance it out. It just seemed gratuitous and harsh at times. I had trouble understanding why Ryder was treating someone that he loved since childhood, the way he did. I found him to be crude and unsexy, with the way he spoke to Maddie and treated her like she meant nothing to him.
The ending left me feeling uneasy about starting the second book. Why would I want to go back to this world that has become so horrible? My curiosity got the better of me though.
Tamie: First off I have to confess that I’m not really a huge fan of dystopian novels most of the time, but I really enjoyed “Promise Me Darkness”. Some of it was uncomfortable for me but I loved Ryder even when he was an ass. I liked Maddie as well, and the secondary characters were an interesting mix. I enjoyed reading along as they went from friends to a romance even in the midst of horror. For me this book was a solid 4.
Good news!! Promise Me Darkness (book 1) will be on sale for .99 from Sept 24-Oct 8.
Promise Me Light by Paige Weaver
Synopsis: The epic conclusion of New York Times bestselling book “Promise Me Darkness”
“I’m darkness, Maddie. Stay away from men like me. You’ll only get hurt.”
At one time my life was simple. Easy. But that was before the war. Now I was no longer an average college student. I was a survivor. A woman living in a ravaged world. My future was not bright and my life was far from perfect. The war had taken so much from me… but it wasn’t finished yet. It wanted more.
It wanted my heart. My soul. The one person I couldn’t live without.
It wanted Ryder Delaney. My best friend. The bad boy. The one person who could fight like no other and love me like no one else. I watched him walk away one hot summer day and I prayed he would return. I needed him like I needed air to breathe and water to drink. Without him I was lost. A light without her darkness.
Until he returns, I’ll wait for him. And I believe he will return because love is powerful…
And so is the light calling him home.
I found the second book to be a much better read for me. I don’t know if it’s because I was more prepared or that I liked the main character, Maddie more, because she was so strong and determined to not give up on Ryder. In this book, we get to see Maddie surviving on her own, wondering if Ryder is still alive and coming back. There is so much more at stake now.
The secondary characters Eva, Brody, Cash, and Gavin definitely helped keep the story moving, and their constant support and love for Maddie made me appreciate them more.
Somebody once said that when darkness fell, we would be shown the light. I wasn’t sure that was true. Darkness had descended on my world and all I saw was despair.
The United States was fighting a war on its own soil. Society was crumbling. Millions were starving. Thousands were dying.
For me the days were dark. I was no longer a carefree college student. I was now a survivor. A fighter. A woman lost in grief.
I still found the constant push and pull between Maddie and Ryder annoying at times, but I did like it when Maddie would stand her ground. I also liked the flashbacks to their past together. It helped me to understand them better, though I still don’t fully get Ryder’s attitude in parts of the story.
Lastly, there is a happy ending, while not exactly what I thought would happen, I am glad that the story is complete. If you are looking for a darker, more intense love story then this is definitely a great series.
I gave Promise Me Darkness 3-1/2 stars and Promise Me Light 4 stars.
Tamie: Promise Me Light was even darker than book one. Honestly, it wasn’t as good for me until the last quarter of the book. I was constantly in a state of turmoil and I didn’t love the characters as much through a lot of it. This could be due to the theme…as I said it’s not my favorite genre. I did enjoy how the book wrapped up, and even tho I didn’t love it as much I would still recommend that peeps give it a try.
