MAKE MY HEART RACE
A Note from Rebecca: “This is the original version of a scene from BARELY BREATHING that was trimmed and edited for various plot reasons. But I still adore this playful moment between Emma and Evan. In just a few paragraphs, it’s easy to remember what I love about this couple. I hope you love it too.”
“Are you okay?” Evan asked. “That sigh didn’t sound like it had anything to do with Calculus.”
I hadn’t realized I’d sighed out loud.
“I was thinking… that I don’t want you to be so worried about me,” I said reluctantly. “I want you to trust me when I say I’m okay. Will you?”
“Do you think I’m being too cautious with you?” he questioned.
“Maybe a little,” I admitted. “Let me prove to you that I’m better. Think of something for us to do next weekend that is not bowling—something that will make my heart race.”
Evan grinned. He set his book on the floor and pulled my legs further across his lap, wrapping his arms around my waist. I dropped my book to the floor and smiled in return. Evan pressed his warm, firm lips against mine, sending my heart into a frenzied flutter. He moved his mouth along my neck, sending a tingling through me that left me breathless. I leaned back, lying on the couch, and Evan leaned between my legs to follow me. I slid my hands along his back, feeling the muscles flex as he eased himself over me. My pulse quickened, with his body against me. Our lips moved together urgently, triggering an internal craving that made me grip him tighter.
“Is your heart racing?” he whispered, his breath tickling my ear.
“Mmm hmm,” I moaned in affirmation.
“Evan?” my mother hollered from the kitchen. I could hear her footsteps approaching.
Evan sat up quickly, scooping up his text book and placing it on his lap. I let out an exasperated breath and slid up to rest my back on the arm of the couch. He tried to conceal his smile by pressing his lips together, staring at his book.
“Would you like to stay for dinner?” Rachel asked, standing under the large framed entrance of the room. “Emily, are you okay?”
I raised my head, forcing a tight smile. “Yeah, Calculus sucks, that’s all.”
“I’d love to stay for dinner,” Evan answered, unable to hide his smile any longer.
