Happy Fan Fic Friday!! It’s Annie and I this week sharing what we’ve been reading lately. Annie’s story is a WIP that sounds hot and steamy. My two stories are a classic and recently completed one.
At any rate, we are excited to talk about what we are reading!!
But first, because it’s hot outside and well, he’s always hot in a white t-shirt….

Annie’s up first, of course…
Heart’s Desire (Ceanothus gloriosus) by daisyandphoebe
Authors’ summary: Bella’s life, predictable and streaked with poor timing, can use a re-landscape. The decision to make some changes brings with it an old friend. The boy who had pulled up a chair, opened a sketch pad, and infiltrated her mind for four years stands, now a man, behind her screen. But inviting him in is not as simple as opening the door.
Two of my favorite authors, thimbles and BelieveItOrNot, are collaborating on this WIP. Bella is a single woman, she has friends, parents, a house, and a yard. When she decides to have some landscaping done, the man who comes to make the plan is an old high school friend.
Excerpt from chapter 2:
His gaze trails every detail. He slides his phone out of his back pocket and snaps pictures from different angles. I’m relieved I’d lugged Mr. Crowley’s lawnmower back here, strained to get it to cut the grass rather than iron it. The sore muscles that had me walking funny all weekend were worth it. The savage weeds are embarrassing enough without the added neglect of a mow.
“What are you thinking?” he asks, making his way back to me. “Simplicity? A color scheme? Just greens?”
He laughs, his face brightening. “Which one?”
“All of it. Anything. Just different.”
“You’ve given this a lot of thought.”
I catch the sarcasm in his tone, but I have given it a lot of thought. It’s just that I can’t think now.
“I-I know I want strawberries somewhere, and a place to plant some vegetables every year. A few more trees. And yeah, color. And smell. Lots of good smells. Colorful smells.”
“Lilac,” he says, moving closer.
I look up at him. One or two more steps and he’ll be close enough for his breath to reach me. He’s already close enough for his body heat to mix with mine.
“Lilac is definitely for you.”
“It is?” I breathe.
“It loves this climate, too. Not too hot, not too dry.”
I have the urge to touch him the way he touched my soil, graze his forearms, or even just his fingers, lying there at his side aimed at the earth. My earth. He looks away for a second, sort of smiles at nothing and looks back at me. “It’s so weird seeing you now. You know, I used to like you?”
My breathing pauses. My stomach spins. Chills, enhanced by the breeze, run along my arms. I’m aware of the wind in a way I wasn’t before. It wafts over me, lifts my hair, toys with me.
Is that a blush on him? His cheeks seem to redden, but not long enough for me to be certain. Maybe I imagined it.
“No, you didn’t.” I stroke my cool glass pendant.
He shrugs and offers nothing more.
He used to like her. Oh, my. Maybe this is a second chance? Or are there complications? I guess time will tell. You guys, I love both these authors. Their writing is stellar and I’m just going to sit back and enjoy their magic as it comes. Join me, won’t you?
First, if you are looking for some angst to read, then I want to talk about Snapdragon by Prettykittyartist. Yeah, I was late to this party, but I also don’t read much angst. Unfortunately, it’s no longer available online. If anyone out there has a copy or PDF to share, please comment below.
Author’s summary: Once upon a time, a girl fell in love with a boy. He gave her a ring and promised her forever. No one told her there’s be an expiration date on her glass slippers. What’s a girl to do when she stands to lose everything? She fights. Hard. EXB AH AU.
We come into the story with Bella and Edward married with 4 kids. We get flashbacks of how they met as highschool kids. Edward’s nickname for Bella back then was “cookie”, because she was covered in sand from the beach, and he thought that she looks like a sugar cookie. I know, so sweet.
The angst comes when Bella and Edward fall into the routine of life, where there is less connection and communication. Edward’s ex-girlfriend Lauren shows up to cause more problems. Bella is at her wit’s end, and can’t take much more…
Excerpt from Chapter 11:
His hands gripped the counter so tightly that I could see the white bone in his knuckles. His back rose and fell with the heaviness of his breathing. The thick, silent tension was suffocating, and I couldn’t stand it anymore. I stomped out of the room and ran up the stairs to the guest bedroom, slapping the door behind me. The bed was cold and empty and broke the last thread of decorum I possessed.
I flung myself against the mattress and buried my head in the stiff, musty pillows. As I cried, my mind spun with memory after memory of my life with Edward, from the very first days of our relationship, to those from the present. All I’d ever wanted was him, from the very first moment. He’d hurt me before, we’d argued before, but it had never been so devastating. I felt like it was over–that it was the end of us.
I felt like a fool, never anticipating what would happen if such a thing came to be. I lived an illusion of happily ever after, but I should have known that it wouldn’t be easy. I’d tried to be good to him, make him happy, and take care of him. I gave him every cell I possessed, every moment of my life as far back I could remember. Being discarded was by far the most insulting, overwhelming degrading thing I’d ever experienced, and I wouldn’t never dreamed of him treating me that way.
He loved me, at least, at one time he did. I always knew it, and I always felt it. Even when he wasn’t showing it, deep in my heart I knew. While I lay there in the dark, sterile guest room of the home we’d built together over the years. I couldn’t feel anything. I knew nothing. Everything was lost, and I felt like I was spinning out of control.
I know, tissues were used by me throughout the story, but it was worth it in the end. There is a happy ending for everyone involved. It was written in a very real point of view, which I appreciate.
Author’s summary: Maps dictate where we go, but they don’t always take us home. City subway tunnels and dim street lights converge, bringing two people infinitely closer. Will a chance meeting lead them to forever? Maybe it ws only a matter of time. Romance BXE; Rated M
Couple of things about this story that I absolutely adored. I take the train to work everyday in Chicago, and even though this story is based in Toronto, I can relate to commuting that way. I will say I have NOT seen anyone who looks like Edward on my train, but there are some great looking men to admire. Noone stands that close to anyone, but a girl can fantasize, right? Also, French is spoken through the story, and that is so sexy. I loved Montreal when I visited in the spring of 2006.
Bella takes the same train, sits in the same car, at the same time of day, and had been admiring a certain man for a couple of months now. One day things change, when he happens to move closer to where she sits, and things kind of cross the line…
Excerpt from Chapter 5:
The overhead speaker announces my stop is coming up, taking us out of our bubble. I gather my stuff and stand, playing the brush-against-Edward’s-body game on my way up. Yes, he’s definitely well on his way to being hard. And, dammit, I’m leaving.
This time when I’m fully pressed up against him, his arm around my waist, gripping me to him firmly, he bends a little and trails his nose up the side of my neck, causing me to shiver. I can barely breathe or even think coherently. My toes curl in response, and I may or may not whimper just a tad. Hopefully, it’s swallowed by the sound of the train slowing down on the tracks.
Just as the train pulls into the station, he whispers in my ear, “Tu parles bien français, ma belle.” (You speak French well, beautiful.)
My wide eyes fly up to his and a blush steals over my cheeks. I can’t believe he understood that. What were the chances? Well, shit. Out of all the people in this city who can’t understand a lick of French, he had to not only understand it, but speak it, too. My panties are dead. My mouth is hanging open. And I think my brain just went bye-bye.
Rubbing his cheek against mine, he whispers one last thing in my ear, “Checkmate.”
He grins his smug little smirk at me, showing me that damn dimple, as I rush off the train as fast as I can, trying not to miss the open doors to my stop. When I look back at him through the window, he’s shaking his head, his eyes on me, and biting his bottom lip. He looks like the sweetest sin, and I want to take a bite of that apple.
Edward is so incredibly hot in this story, because there are so many interesting things about him that we learn while reading this love story. I also love that they take things slow, so the UST is incredible. It’s a quick read that made me smile, and take a second look at what is going on, or maybe WHO is going on around me while I’m on the train. LOL Honestly, I am always reading, so I don’t focus on communters too much.
Hope everyone is having a great summer!!
