Amelia Reviews: Deacon by Kristen Ashley

Deacon has an ugly history, a history that broke him, leaving him a ghost of a man. Out of necessity, he left the normal world to descend into the criminal world and found he fit. So he stayed. Cold as ice and living off the grid, Deacon has no intention to connect, not with anyone.

Then he returns to some remote cabins in the Colorado Mountains and finds they have new owners. One of them is Cassidy Swallow, a young woman willing to work hard to live her quiet dream in a house by a river surrounded by aspen and pine.
Suddenly, Deacon finds he’s at war. Cassidy’s pull for him to connect is strong. He fights it, but he loses, always coming back for more. But when he does, he gives her nothing.
From the first time she sees him, Cassidy knows Deacon is dead inside. She knows he’s the kind of man who could destroy a woman. But one night when Deacon’s control slips, Cassidy takes a chance.

He might break her. He also might be her dream come true.

Deacon is the fourth book in the Unfinished Hero series by Kristen Ashley. As you all know, Unfinished Hero is my favorite series by KA, and Deacon is my number one favorite of all four. I think the story is beautifully written and the book is just unputdownable. It tells the story about a broken man and the magnificent woman who heals his heart and soul. This story focuses on the relationship of Deacon and Cassie, unlike most KA books, there are no bad guys or kidnapping or car bombing, it’s just about two people and their beautiful love story.

Cassidy “Cassie” Swallow is following her dream of owning and renting beautiful cabins in the Colorado Mountains with her boyfriend, Grant. Cassie is a hardworking, smart, independent and loyal woman. She’s willing to do whatever it takes and sacrifice to make her dreams come true. Grant is not… Feeling the pressure of making Cassie’s dream come true and realizing that he doesn’t have the same dream; Grant finally left her for good.

Deacon Gates is a seemingly big, cold, emotionless guy (he’s also sex on a stick) with a somewhat dark past. He is the definition of mystery. Seriously, we don’t even know his real name until halfway through the book. He goes by the name John Priest and has been visiting Glacier Lily Cottages cabin eleven for years. Deacon is one of those characters that since his first appearance you just know that he’s got a lot of story to tell and been through a lot in his life. What I love about Deacon is that, although he’s sharp on the edge and a brooding badass, we also get to see his sweet and tender side when he’s with Cassie.

The chemistry and emotional connections between Deacon and Cassie are very remarkable. The intimacy is done perfectly, and I’m not just talking about the sex; it’s the way they talk with and how they are around each other. All in all, Deacon is a simple yet beautiful love story that warms your heart. KA gives us so much in this book; from a beautiful location, well developed characters and scorching hot sex. Wonderful book from start to finish that I would recommend to everyone who will listen. It also makes me want to pack my bags and move to Glacier Lily Cottages cabin eleven… KA has yet to disappoint me. Deacon gets 4.5 bossy, warm and sweet stars from me!

“Badasses know what they want, definitely know what they need, and don’t settle for anything less.”

“Heart and soul, gut and balls, I love you. There’s no one I’d rather hold. Not until I’m eighty. Not until the day I die.”

“What we have, that’s beautiful war, Deacon.”

“Anything. You want it, I got it in me to give it to you, you got anything from me.”

“Showed me a strong woman doesn’t need keeping, but feels good to take care of her all the same. Better, you gotta fight for that privilege.”

I FLOVED this book! I loved that KA took a different approach with this one and strayed from the action a bit and took us on their journey. I think it really supported the story line that Deacon was not going to let his life touch her. I truly couldn’t decide if I loved Cassie or Deacon more. She was just awesome! Had her head screwed on straight, didn’t need a man, but wanted one and made her choices and lived with them. She was awesome. Deacon, well, holy hell! Deacon was so awesome, he managed to knock Luke Stark out of my number one KA hero spot! No BS, just Deacon. Good or bad. I couldn’t get enough. One of the best I’ve read by KA!!
