Fan Fiction Friday: Something Beautiful Remains and Stripped Desire

Since it’s Good Friday for those who celebrate Easter, I wanted to share two fics that I recently read and love. Think of it as my “good deed” for this Friday!

One is a WIP and the other is complete, so there is something for everyone…

Stripped Desire by MrzEdCullen

Author’s summary: Logic and art, numbers and paint—two different worlds from each other. Life made them collide, but one dangerous request could lead to much more than what they bargained for. COMPLETE

Apparently I am in my “artist phase” because lately I’ve been drawn to male characters that are creative and artistic. This Edward is a very talented artist that wants to paint Bella. In the prologue, we read that she is not all that comfortable with herself and her decision to pose for him.

In the chapters that follow, it’s about how they meet and how different their lives are from each other. Bella comes from a wealthy family with a past that she is not all that proud of, but she is still connected to out of obligation. We never really get a true understanding of what she does for a living by the end, but it’s not all that important.

Bella needs control and balance in her life, but when she sees Edward at an art gallery opening, he leaves quite the impression. “Let me paint you.” That is the first thing that he says to her, and continues to say until she agrees.

Excerpt from Chapter 2, Red:

I’m losing my mind, and Edward Cullen is to blame. He’s messing with my head, all that staring, all that silence, and that aura of mystery that surrounds him.

All that green.

I’ve thought of nothing else for days that drag on and on and on. It’s doesn’t matter how much work I cram into a day, there’s always space left to think about his proposal–about him.

And the nights…

The nights are unbidden time programmed for a sleep that doesn’t come. The illusion of safety brought by darkness gives my body free rein to imagine, to yearn and ask and plead for something that I can’t have.

Something that I can’t understand.

I come with the whisper of his voice and the green of his eyes as he taunts and stares.

It has become a regular occurrence.

The chemistry between them is intense and grows with each encounter. Then when Bella finally goes to his studio to begin their sessions, it’s Edward that admits his attraction as well.

Excerpt from Chapter 4, Canvas:

“You have lovely hair, but I was thinking you should wear it up,” Edward says, searching my eyes over his drawing. I meet his stare not sure of what my eyes are saying. He gives me a small smile and squeezes my fingers.

I take a deep breath and give him a small nod.

He nods back and rambles something about the type of paint he’ll use. I can’t focus on his words. He also shows me where I’ll be, where he’ll sit, and the lamps he’ll use to help with the lighting. Nothing of it is important to me. I’m only focusing on the fact that I have to get naked for him. That, and the colorful ink that peeks out of his t-shirt every time he gestures with his right arm.

“Are you listening to me?” he asks, concerned.

“Yeah, sorry,” I answer.

“I’m surprised by your silence,” he admits, furrowing his brows.

“Did you forget I was here?” I ask, arching an eyebrow.

He chuckles and shakes his head. “Trust me, that’s next to impossible.”

“How so?”

He gives me a long, serious look before answering.

“I can almost feel your skin humming, Isabella. It’s fucking maddening.”

I’m lost for words, yet again.

As their relationship grows and moves forward, Bella is finally given the opportunity to deal with her family and her past. Edward gives her support, love and strength to do just that. *happy sigh*

The other thing I loved about this story is the quotes that the author selected for each chapter. I saved more than one, because I loved them that much.

“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” Aristotle.

One of my new year’s resolutions this year is start reading more WIPs. I know, I know, it’s weird, but I think I miss getting the alerts in my mailbox, when stories I love update. Michelle’s post prompted me to get on with my resolution, when she posted stories she is looked forward to reading. It was kind of like, oh right! That resolution to read more WIPs, I need to get on that…

Of course, I chose an AU story because I’m me. LOL

Something Beautiful Remains

Something Beautiful Remains by Bethesda Gray

Author’s Summary: After terrible loss, Bella returns to Forks to tie up loose ends. What she finds, though, is a new beginning she never could have imagined. Vampire AU, Edward/Bella.

Here is what I can tell you so far. Edward leaves after encountering Bella in Biology class, but doesn’t come back. Bella doesn’t have relationship with him or the Cullens. She has a relationship with Jacob and the tribe instead. They get married and have a child.

You know what Michelle says about angsty stories, this is definitely a “keep a tissue box nearby” kind of read.

Like the summary suggests, Bella experiences great loss and has to return to Forks. That’s where her interactions with the Cullens begin. Despite Bella not being around after graduation, Charlie was friends with the family. They want to help Bella with whatever she needs while in Forks. She finds them odd but kind. Edward is definitely brooding and mysterious in this one.

I think because Bella is an adult with some experience with men and relationships, that as much as she finds Edward attractive, she doesn’t trust him or herself around him. With everything that she is dealing with, I get it.

Excerpt from Chapter 7:

“Edward, I don’t know why you’ve been helping me, or why you care about me at all. And… it’s been nice. Having someone care. Having someone… to wonder about. It’s been a little bit like being in a story, and you’re this mysterious man who found me when I was hurting, when I needed help. It made me want to believe that, maybe, you’d be the one to help me.” Bella looked up and saw him looking at her with undisguised longing. She looked away and rushed on.

“But you’re lying to me, Edward. I see it, all the time. And I want to pretend that I don’t, but… I just have to ask myself, if this is a story… What if you’re the bad guy?”

Edward flinched as though she’d struck him.

“Bella,” he said, his voice a low rasp. “I will never hurt you.”

Bella looked down at her hands in her lap. A single tear ran down her cheek and landed on her wrist.

“I just don’t know, Edward, and I can’t take the chance. There’s… not much left of me, you see. I have to be careful.” She looked up at him with wet eyes. “This has to be goodbye, Edward.”

He looked away. His face was agony.

“Bella, please—”

“Please just do what I’m asking you to,” Bella said, the words tumbling out rapidly. “Please don’t make this worse. I don’t want to call the police. I don’t want to believe you’re that kind of bad guy. Please, please don’t make it like that.”

His face was a study in desperation. His mouth tried to form words, but none came out.

Finally, acceptance settled into his features. He swallowed hard, sat up straighter.

“Okay,” he said. “It will be as you ask.”

He stood up then and walked away from her, to his car. He didn’t look back.

Bella watched him drive away, his car getting smaller and smaller, until it turned a corner and was gone. She wrapped her arms around herself and tried to feel relieved.

If you have been wondering where Miss Annie has been, she has been busy with a great cause that I want to share with you! She is on the 2015 Rob’s Birthday Project team, raising money for Go Campaign, from April 1st-May 13th (Rob’s birthday).  Specifically, the team is hoping to raise enough donations to complete funding for the School of Hope in Svay Khleang Village, Cambodia. Here is the link to the website with information and how to donate.

Happy Easter girls! I am I’m carefully nursing my sappy heart whilst reading Something Beautiful Remains *sighs*
As for Stripped Desire … another one to go to my TBR list!
Right now I’m immersing myself in Metaphysics by anais mark – a piece of literature in the same level of S Robichaud’s UoEM or M Locklear’s Bella Voce and a good “f*ck you” to those who preach otherwise!
Thank you girls for all your hard work!

Thank you, Katiebird for the AU rec especially. It must be hard to select just the right text to represent the story – what you gave us really grabbed me! Plus the author has another completed story that sounds intriguing too.
Thanks also for the info on the Rob’s Birthday project. What a lovely way to celebrate.
    Win all around!
