I’m Just Curious…

I’m a curious person. Always have been and hope I always will be. Big things, little things, things of importance, inconsequential things…you get the picture. As a blogger I’m curious about how people respond so differently to storylines, writing styles, characters, etc., and I’m hoping you’ll indulge my curiosity from time to time on different bookish topics…

This first topic came about because of a book I read last week. Some people revel in high angst throughout a book. I’m guessing they like that rush of adrenaline that spikes through your body when the drama turns high. This book had it constantly. Drama, great sex, breakup, great sex, argument, great sex…repeat on an endless loop.

So, what I’m just curious about is this? Do you have a cutoff point for the angst level? Does there come a time for you when enough is enough and you just give up caring whether the couple in a book stay together or not? If so do you flounce on the book or feel like you have to stay til the bitter end?

Me? My tolerance is way above what it once was. I understand that there needs to be some sort of conflict to keep things interesting, to make me really get behind a couple being and staying together. BUT, when a couple is arguing and breaking up over and over again, especially over the same issues then I begin to think that they’re not made for each other, never will be and quite honestly I wish they’d just go their separate ways. Thankfully, I don’t run into too many of those. So, give me some angst, don’t hit me over the head with it, and don’t drag it out too long. That’s what I’m talking about 😉

Alright…hit me with your thoughts now.

I’m with you on conflict, because that usually drives the story. It would be a dull book with out it. BUT for me I need to understand why it’s there, and if I see if the characters can get past it, change for the better. If they don’t or if the conflict feels over done or fake, then I can’t relate to it.
I don’t usually leave books unfinished for this particular reason, but I have stopped reading a series because of it.

I adore books with lots of conflict. However, when the characters keep making the same mistake over and over (and over) again my frustration level goes up and book enjoyment goes down. Didn’t Albert Einstein say, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
I usually finish my books. But, it would be insane of me to continue a story to the bitter end when the characters (or author) will not learn this lesson.

  3. I am a fan of angst stories. What I am not a fan of is the angst that goes on and on and and then POOF, all better. That is a DNF for me.

It’s exhausting and gives true angst stories a bad wrap.

The angst should never be continuous with no moving forward.
It should never be where the issue was an easily resolved misunderstanding. That’s a typical contemp romance story line.

And under no circumstances should the angst end on a cliffie! That is a slap to the readers. You can not emotionally exhaust a reader and then end with a , “see you next book”. That’s a real quick, “will never read that author again” for me!!

Great feature!! Will look forward to more of your sounding boards!!
