One of my all time favorite YA series ever is now a TV series on Freeform (formerly ABC Family). It’s called Shadowhunters. It has vampires, warlocks, werewolves, demons, and angels; and hot guys of course!
First, we should talk about the book series, The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. Since I started posting here on BT, this series, as well as as the other books written by this author, has been at the top of my Favorite lists for the last 3 years. (Not this year, because there were no books published in 2015).
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?
This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know…
Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare’s ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.
Thoughts…Love this series like crazy. It was the first thing I read after Twilight, that even remotely held my attention. Mainly because of Jace Wayland (see book cover above) and Simon Lewis (see book 4 cover, City of Fallen Angels). Very different guys, but equally hawt in their own right. You just have to read it to get that.
Now for my take on the tv series. I just finished watching the first episode, and love the casting so far. I mean, seriously Dominic Sherwood and Katherine McNamara (a red head namely Katherine, what’s not to love?).
From what I can tell so far, they don’t follow the same timeline as the book, so I am curious if this first season is going to go past the first book, City of Bones. Clary is 18 years old on the show, but that might be so that Freeform can take a more New Adult approach to her relationship with Jace, than Young Adult. Let’s hope that the chemistry between the actors gets as steamy hawt as it did throughout the book series. Sidenote: Want to fall more in love/lust with Dominic? Watch the Taylor Swift music video, Style. There are no words…
I am on Team Simon, and will always be, so I have to talk about Alberto Rosende. Don’t let his geek-like exterior fool you, because he has his own transformation/storyline that made me fall deeply in love through all 7 books, and I am now reading his own book called Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy. (Interrupted my reading to write this post, though)
I am curious to see how his relationship with Isabelle plays out on the small screen, because in my mind it is as equally important as Clary and Jace’s relationship. If you think that it is insta-love for our couples, you could not be more mistaken. Hang on because it gets bumpy for sure.
So now my suggestion to you would be to read the Mortal Instruments book series, and watch the Shadowhunters tv series, but if that isn’t enough, or if you’ve already done that, then I would read the even more amazing series from Cassandra Clare. The Infernal Devices. I could spend a whole other post on that fantastic series, because it is that good, and might even be better than the Mortal Instruments. Most fans will agree with me on that, but please comment below if you have thoughts…
