Katiebird Reviews Target on Our Backs by JM Darhower

Target on Our Backs by J.M. Darhower

The best way to keep your word is never to give it.

Not long ago, in a chapel in Vegas, I swore to love Karissa for the rest of my days. But nobody’s promised an infinite number of tomorrows. Nobody’s promised forever. Sometimes, all we have left is today.

Carpe Diem.
Seize the day.

It should’ve been over, we should’ve been happy, but people are making it hard for me to live in peace. I’ve got so much blood on my hands they’ll never be clean, and somebody out there seems to want me to pay for it. Happily Ever After always comes at a cost, one any real man would be willing to pay. But that doesn’t mean I’m just going to roll over and accept these consequences.

Because when it comes to the woman I love? The life I’ve fought for?

Nobody is safe.

Ignazio is quite the character, so I loved being back in his head. I actually had to step away to take a break,  because it got so intense. I loved it!

In the second book, we got to see the results of Karissa’s love and forgiveness, but Naz’s past will not just go away. Even if you try ignoring it. That is what this last book is about. Naz has to deal with his past, and he goes about it in his own way.

Like the title implies, Naz’s enemies aren’t interested in him walking away. They will do just about anything to get his attention and force his hand.

Her gaze meets mine, and I watch as the rage fades away, melting straight to that goddamn heartbreak.

I hate it

I hate seeing it.

But fuck, she’s beautiful.

Happy. Sad. Angry. Terrified.

She’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

She’s beautiful because she’s strong.

Beautiful because she’s fierce.

Beautiful because, even when I hesitated, she didn’t.

She fought.

She fought hard.

And goddamn if that’s not beautiful to me…

I loved how both Karissa and Naz fought for each other, and were able to find peace and happiness.

I squeeze my eyes shut tighter, trying to imagine another world again. A world where we’re happy, where we’re together, where we’re away from all of this.

A world without a target on our backs.

A world where Naz comes home.

A world where we can live in peace.

A world that’s just ours.

JM is known for her Mafia storylines. I might not be a fan of all books that go that route, but because of her main characters and even the secondary characters, I found this whole series very well done.

I give this book 5 intense stars and put it on my “top shelf fantastic reads” shelf on Goodreads.
