Higher Ground by Nan Lowe

Nearly a decade after leaving her tumultuous high school years and New Orleans behind, Dr. Violet Foster is thriving in Atlanta. She’s landed a job in the English Department of a prestigious school and shares a home—and her heart—with Wade Price, the love of her life. Everything’s going according to plan.

Until a phone call from Violet’s younger brother thwarts her holiday plans and upends her carefully constructed life. She’s managed to avoid her hometown for years and dance around the secrets she left buried there. A wedding reception and an ailing grandmother beckon her return to The Big Easy, but as her departure nears, Violet is forced to reconcile the person she was with the woman she’s become. Even if it means losing everything she holds dear.

It was a privilege to be asked by Nan Lowe to read her first published work. It’s love story told in a unique way. I loved it…

Most storylines go forward in time, but when an author decides to go a different route, it has to be for a purpose. For Violet, she needs to tell her story in a unique way. When she gets a call from her brother that he got married, for the first time since she left her hometown, she is compelled to go home.

For most people, that isn’t a big deal, but she hasn’t been home in years. Too many ghosts and bad memories for her. She is happy with her life and her relationship with Wade. For me, Wade is a saint. I mean, I’m meeting Violet for the first time, but Wade, he’s known and loved Violet for years. But he is learning about Violet’s past, just as I am.

Nan weaves the telling of Violet’s past in flashbacks, and it’s done beautifully. Each scene reveals more about Violet’s trust issues and guilt that she has been holding on for so long. At first it feels like a coming of age story, but then it is a love story. Only it’s two love stories. Violet is in love with Wade. It’s only when she finally faces her past, that she reveals what happened to her first love. It changed her like only first loves can.

I’ve never been to New Orleans, but I really want to now, especially around the holidays. It just sounds amazing.
