Katiebird Reviews Roomies by Christina Lauren

There is so much to love about this book! So excited to share my favorite parts…

Roomies by Christina Lauren

5 stars 3

Marriages of convenience are so…inconvenient.

Rescued by Calvin McLoughlin from a would-be subway attacker, Holland Bakker pays the brilliant musician back by pulling some of her errand-girl strings and getting him an audition with a big-time musical director. When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadway—until he admits his student visa has expired and he’s in the country illegally.

Holland impulsively offers to wed the Irishman to keep him in New York, her growing infatuation a secret only to him. As their relationship evolves from awkward roommates to besotted lovers, Calvin becomes the darling of Broadway. In the middle of the theatrics and the acting-not-acting, what will it take for Holland and Calvin to realise that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?

I have been a huge fan of both Christina and Lauren for years, since 2010 when I started reading fan fiction. Since they have joined forces and started publishing their work, they just keep getting better and better.

If you go to their blog (I provided a link above when you click on their name), you can read the first couple of chapters of Roomies. The first chapter grabbed me completely, and that is not an easy thing to do. It takes real skill to capture a reader’s attention from the beginning.

Living in a big city myself, I do take public transportation every day, but there is definitely not anyone who looks or sounds like Calvin at my train stops. Believe me I’ve looked. Bummer for me…

Taylor Kitsch is my Calvin

Here is a brief list of what I love about this book. The main characters feel genuine and are not perfect. While Holland is attracted to Calvin from the beginning, their physical relationship isn’t instant, like you would expect from these authors. I really loved that. Now when things do heat up, no one writes love/sex scenes like Christina Lauren (Personally, Lola has always been my favorite for sex scenes).  Humor and fantastic secondary characters are also written perfectly.  In the first chapter, I laugh and get shaken up by the end, so I knew I was going to go on a great ride!

favorite quotes

There is a high that comes from live shows, a collective energy in a large group of people all gathered for one reason. The beat slices through the melodies and then drops; the crowd bounces and undulates like ripples of water.

Will anything ever be permanent? What the hell am I going to do with my life? I only get one shot at this, and right now, I’m finding my value only in being valuable to others. How do I find value for me?

But this…writing about how it feels to listen to music, to have found him–it almost feels like I’m writing a description of how my organs work together, what keeps me breathing. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this before.

***I was given an advanced copy through Net Galley for an honest review. All excerpts are from that version.***
