A Promise of Fire (The Kingmaker Chronicles #1) by Amanda Bouchet

Catalia “Cat” Fisa is a powerful clairvoyant known as the Kingmaker. This smart-mouthed soothsayer has no interest in her powers and would much rather fly under the radar, far from the clutches of her homicidal mother. But when an ambitious warlord captures her, she may not have a choice…

Griffin is intent on bringing peace to his newly conquered realm in the magic-deprived south. When he discovers Cat is the Kingmaker, he abducts her. But Cat will do everything in her power to avoid her dangerous destiny and battle her captor at every turn. Although up for the battle, Griffin would prefer for Cat to help his people willingly, and he’s ready to do whatever it takes to coax her…even if that means falling in love with her.

Honestly I didn’t know what I was getting into when I started this book. Even after reading the summary again, I still feel that it doesn’t do the book justice. I am so glad that I found this book!

Katiebird Reviews The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa

The Iron Fey Series by Julie Kagawa

The Faery realms have always weathered the clash of Summer and Winter fey, the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. Now a new breed of faery has emerged to challenge both… to their peril. Forged by Man’s insatiable pursuit of technological superiority, the terrifying Iron fey are massing…and the fate of all faeries hangs in the balance. The greatest weapon in this epic magical war? A half-human teenage girl.

Honestly, I really am wondering what the hell I was reading when these books came out back in 2012-2013. Well..there really is only so much time in the day to read, so I will have to forgive myself for not starting this series sooner. With each book, I fell more in love with the characters and their lives. It will be no surprise to anyone who has read this series to hear which book is my favorite!

Katiebird reviews Season of the Witch by Natasha Mostert

Season of the Witch by Natasha Mostert

Season of the Witch cover

Made with Repix (http://repix.it)

In her award-winning novel, Mostert blends alchemy, the art of memory, high magic and murder to create a highly original psychological thriller.

Gabriel Blackstone is a cool, hip, thoroughly twenty-first century Londoner with an unusual talent. A computer hacker by trade, he is also a remote viewer: able to ‘slam a ride’ through the minds of others.

But he uses his gift only reluctantly ― until he is contacted by an ex-lover who begs him to find her step-son, last seen months earlier in the company of two sisters.

And so Gabriel visits Monk House, a place where time seems to stand still, and where the rooms are dominated by the coded symbol of a cross and circle.

As winter closes in, Gabriel becomes increasingly bewitched by the house, and by its owners, the beautiful and mysterious Monk sisters. But even as he falls in love, he knows that one of them is a killer.

If you are looking for something different to read for Halloween, I would totally recommend this book. It was so refreshing to read a story told from a guy’s point of view. This is NOT horror by any means, but it is creepy and dark.

Katiebird reviews The Sweetest Dark series by Shana Abe

The Sweetest Dark series by Shana Abe

The Sweetest Dark cover

Book Summary:

The Sweetest Dark is filled with thrilling romance, exciting adventure, and ancient magic. Shana Abé brilliantly captures the drama of post-Victorian England, while unfolding a passionate love story that defies time.

“With every fiber of my being, I yearned to be normal. To glide through my days at Iverson without incident. But I’d have to face the fact that my life was about to unfold in a very, very different way than I’d ever envisioned. Normal would become forever out of reach.”

Lora Jones has always known that she’s different. On the outside, she appears to be an ordinary sixteen-year-old girl. Yet Lora’s been keeping a heartful of secrets: She hears songs that no one else can hear, dreams vividly of smoke and flight, and lives with a mysterious voice inside her that insists she’s far more than what she seems.

England, 1915. Raised in an orphanage in a rough corner of London, Lora quickly learns to hide her unique abilities and avoid attention. Then, much to her surprise, she is selected as the new charity student at Iverson, an elite boarding school on England’s southern coast. Iverson’s eerie, gothic castle is like nothing Lora has ever seen. And the two boys she meets there will open her eyes and forever change her destiny.

Jesse is the school’s groundskeeper—a beautiful boy who recognizes Lora for who and what she truly is. Armand is a darkly handsome and arrogant aristocrat who harbors a few closely guarded secrets of his own. Both hold the answers to her past. One is the key to her future. And both will aim to win her heart. As danger descends upon Iverson, Lora must harness the powers she’s only just begun to understand, or else lose everything she dearly loves.

Filled with lush atmosphere, thrilling romance, and ancient magic, The Sweetest Dark brilliantly captures a rich historical era while unfolding an enchanting love story that defies time.

It’s been awhile since I have reviewed a YA paranormal romance for BT. It’s the genre I enjoy reading the most. If you haven’t read a YA paranormal romance book in a long time, or maybe didn’t think it would be something you would enjoy, I truly believe that this series should be an exception. Shana Abe has such a beautiful, colorful, and detailed writing style that you can’t help falling in love with this story.

Spellbound by Sylvia Day Blog Tour 2/3-2/16
Synopsis:

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Sylvia Day comes a story of the ultimate seduction. . . .

Max Westin. Sex incarnate. She could smell it, feel it with his proximity. Everything about him was a little rough, a little gritty. He was a primitive creature. Just like her.

He held her hand a little too long, his gaze, under thick lashes, clearly stating his intention to have her. To tame her. . . .

“Victoria.”

Her name, just one word, but spoken with such possession she could almost feel the collar around her neck.

“It’s in your nature,” he murmured. “The desire to be taken.”

In this game of cat and mouse, everything is an illusion, but the passion is as real as it gets. . . .
