Review: Father Mine and The BDB Insider’s Guide by J.R. Ward

Readers met and fell in love with Zsadist and Bella in J. R. Ward-s third New York Times bestselling novel in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, Lover Awakened. As a former blood slave, Zsadist bore the scars from a past filled with suffering and degradation until Bella came along and helped heal his emotional wounds. Now, though, with the birth of their child, the demons of his past have been resurrected, called forth by the innocent eyes of his beloved daughter, Nalla.  Unless Bella and Nalla can bring him back with their love, he may be lost to them forever.

I will admit upfront, I was a bad fangirl. I love this series, but I will admit that I didn’t read the Insider’s Guide that included Father Mine until just recently. Now I’m kicking myself for not having read it earlier. For a short story, this one sure does pack an emotional punch. If you’ve read the other books in the series, you know that thems is big words….Ward is a brilliant marketer for Kleenex. I don’t think I’ve read one of her books and didn’t need a tissue at some point. This one had me reaching for a handful. Find out why, after the jump…

Review: The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan

A Boeing 777 arrives at JFK and is on its way across the tarmac, when it suddenly stops dead. All window shades are pulled down. All lights are out. All communication channels have gone quiet. Crews on the ground are lost for answers, but an alert goes out to the CDC. Dr. Eph Goodweather, head of their Canary project, a rapid-response team that investigates biological threats, gets the call and boards the plane. What he finds makes his blood run cold.

In a pawnshop in Spanish Harlem, a former professor and survivor of the Holocaust named Abraham Setrakian knows something is happening. And he knows the time has come, that a war is brewing…

So begins a battle of mammoth proportions as the vampire virus that has infected New York begins to spill out into the streets. Eph, who is joined by Setrakian and a motley crew of fighters, must now find a way to stop the contagion and save his city–a city that includes his wife and son–before it is too late.

If you love vampires, a good thriller, and a book that will scare you so bad you want to put it in the freezer just like Joey from ‘Friends’, then you will be sure to enjoy this book. I will admit, the light has stayed on in my room a little longer than usual after I put this sucker down to go to sleep. Find out why, after the jump…

Review: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

While on the subway one evening with a friend of mine, he passed me his copy of The Night Circus. “Just read this part.” he said, without another word. The passage he indicated was the prologue, titled “Anticipation”. I read it…and I didn’t want to stop reading. Of course, he took it away with him that night and I’ve yet to forgive him…yeah, you know who you are.
There was something very enthralling about the description of this circus. I’m not even a fan of circuses… *whispers* clowns… *shivers*. I wanted to be standing in front of the gates to this particular one, waiting for the sun to set and the gates to open. Indeed, I felt every bit of the anticipation promised by the prologue title.

Review: Lover Reborn by J.R. Ward

Ever since the death of his shellan, Tohrment has been unrecognizable from the vampire leader he once was. Physically emaciated and heartbroken beyond despair, he has been brought back to the Brotherhood by a self-serving fallen angel. Now fighting once again with ruthless vengeance, he is unprepared to face a new kind of tragedy.

When Tohr begins to see his beloved in his dreams–trapped in a cold, isolated netherworld far from the peace and tranquility of the Fade–he turns to the angel in hopes of saving the one he has lost. But because Lassiter tells him he must learn to love another to free his former mate, Tohr know they are all doomed…

Except then a female with a shadowed history begins to get through to him. Against the backdrop of the raging war with the lessers, and with a new clan of vampires vying for the Blind King’s throne, Tohr struggles between the buried past and a very hot, passion-filled future… but can his heart let go and set all of them free?

***contains spoilers from previous books in the series***
The tenth book in the series and it doesn’t seem like Ward is slowing down at all. This book had me, the first few pages in and I didn’t find that my interest waned, at all. Tohrment’s story had been causing us heart fail for a long time, and I for one was relieved that the end was in sight.
Tohrment was the only Brother who seemed to have it all. He came from a good family, didn’t have any major personal demon’s to speak of, was happily mated to Wellsie for 200 years and of course, had a kick ass job with the Brotherhood. All of that was taken away from him in a split second when a lesser shot and killed Wellsie and their unborn child. Tohrment disappeared for almost a year before Lassiter, a fallen angel, brought him back to the Brotherhood. How does a bonded male come back from such a devastating loss? Hints to come after the jump…

Review: Lover Unleashed by J.R. Ward

Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, warrior cloth as her brother: A fighter by nature, and a maverick when it comes to the traditional role of Chosen females, there is no place for her on the Far Side… and no role for her on the front lines of the war, either.

When she suffers a paralyzing injury, human surgeon Dr. Manuel Manello is called in to treat her as only he can- and he soon gets sucked into her dangerous, secret world. Although he never before believed in things that go bump in the night- like vampires- he finds himself more than willing to be seduced by the powerful female who marks both his body and his soul.

As the two find so much more than an erotic connection, the human and vampire worlds collide … just as a centuries old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in deadly jeopardy.

Not since we were first introduced to Butch did I want so badly, a secondary character to have their own story in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I liked Manny from the moment we were first introduced to him, regardless of the fact that he was possible competition for Jane’s affection. There was something very appealing about his character, and the way he cared for Jane was so swoony and sweet. When he learned of Jane’s you-know-what (and if you don’t know, READ IT) at the end of Lover Unbound, I cried my eyes out for him. Yep… the dreaded, snot-sobbing ugly cry. He already seemed like such a lonely person, even with Jane’s friendship, and once Jane was taken from him he seemed even more forlorn. I had a feeling that wouldn’t be the last we’d see of him and I’m so glad I was right. Let’s jump into Payne and Manny’s story, shall we?

Review: Lover Mine by J.R. Ward

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other – vampire warriors, defenders of their race …John Matthew has been through his vampire transition and taken to the life of the Brotherhood with a vengeance, but he still can’t shake the nightmare of his past and is unsure of his future as a warrior hero. He’s made a promise to honor the Brotherhood and their fight with the slayers at all costs, until the love of his life is kidnapped and he is forced to make a choice that could change his life and the Brotherhood’s forever …

Out of the all the books in the series, I anticipated reading this one the most. Ever since we were first introduced to John Matthew in Lover Eternal, I couldn’t help but grow attached immediately and he quickly became one of my favorites. What I absolutely loved about this book was that John Matthew met Xhex early on, and it was an extremely slow build. Not to mention, the very intense, and very hot UST. In the previous books, we might have heard mention of a Brother’s future shellan before their story unfolded, but we were usually treated to the formula of They Meet + Steamy Sex x Fall in Love = Fixed Brother. It was a nice change to follow along with John Matthew and Xhex through several books and watch as they fumbled awkwardly with a very apparent mutual connection. By the time Xhex went missing at the end of Lover Avenged, I had reached my breaking point. I was gagging to see their shit resolved and the two of them together already…

Review: Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward

Caldwell, New York, has long been the battleground for the vampires and their enemies, the Lessening Society. It’s also where Rehvenge has staked out his turf as a drug lord and owner of a notorious night club that caters to the rich and heavily armed. His shadowy reputation is exactly why he’s approached to kill Wrath, the Blind King and leader of the Brotherhood.

Rehvenge has always kept his distance from the Brotherhood-even though his sister is married to a member, for he harbors a deadly secret that could make him a huge liability in their war against the lessers. As plots within and outside of the Brotherhood threaten to reveal the truth about Rehvenge, he turns to the only source of light in his darkening world, Ehlena, a vampire untouched by the corruption that has its hold on him-and the only thing standing between him and eternal destruction.

Much like Tamie in her post of Rehvenge as her Book Boyfriend (which, if you haven’t seen…GO…very swoonworthy) this is the book I’ve been waiting… impatiently… to review. Rehvenge embodies the characteristics I cannot resist in a male protagonist. One of them is that he’s bad. Yeah I know, the bad boy thing is so cliche. However, he’s not bad in the “he’s kinda-bad-but-really-isn’t” way. He really IS bad. I like. I mentioned that Lover Unbound was the turning point for me in the series from “like” to “love”, but this book was the definite peak for me. It has set the bar pretty high for the rest of the series and, as of yet, I haven’t read another I enjoyed as much. Why did I love it? Keep reading and find out…
