Fan Fic Friday: Dude, Where’s My Fic?

Hiya! Happy Friday! Today we’re introducing a new feature inspired by YOU, our Fan Fic Friday readers. We get great comments from you; you share what you’ve been reading, you comment on our posts, and ask questions about fics past and present. Recently, there have been a number of questions that go something like this:

“I love ‘That Fic That Everyone Loved” but can’t find it anymore! What happened? Help!!”

Fics disappear for a number of reasons: authors leave the fandom, or take down their stories for personal reasons or to rework them. Often though, fics have been taken down because the author is publishing them. So many of the stories you love are out there waiting for you, edited, buffed up and ready to sit proudly on your bookshelf! 🙂 I thought it would be fun to share two of my (many)favourite fic-to-book titles and then tell you which fic I think would make a great published book. Ready? Let’s go.

My picks after the jump!

Katiebird interviews: Shay Savage and Evan Arden from Otherwise Occupied

Checking myself in the door reflection one more time, I step inside the lobby, and make my way to the 676 restaurant and bar in the Omni Hotel. It’s right on Michigan Ave., so it was easy for me to take 147 bus from my home. I am so grateful that Shay agreed to come back to Chicago, and was able to pull some strings to get Evan Arden to meet us here.

Shay Savage-author extraordinaire

Shay Savage-author extraordinaire

God, why am I so nervous? Well, let’s see, Shay Savage is one of my favorite fan fiction authors ever. Probably because she wrote Hide and Drink, I mean I’ve been reading her work for over 4 years now. I dedicated a post to her fan fic work here. But then she got published, and I read Surviving Raine and Otherwise Alone. Again amazing story and character development, check out that review here. *gulp*

Katiebird Reviews: Surviving Raine and Otherwise Alone by Shay Savage

I am not sure if I am in the minority with regards to our readers and followers’ thoughts and feelings about fan fiction authors becoming published authors. I know that we here at BT, don’t have a problem with it, and are thrilled when a story we loved and adored as fan fic, gets the attention it deserves when published, whether it’s self-published, with a small publishing house or one of the bigger ones.

When I read the positive reviews of their published work on Goodreads by people who didn’t know it was fan fiction in the first place or maybe just didn’t read it before being published, that in itself proves to me that the work stands on its own.

I guess I feel like I need to clear the air about this point, because one of my favorite fan fiction writers, Savage7289, is now getting some of her fan fic work published and as well as her original work. I am thrilled for her, and want to share my praise of two of her books here.
